Who provided unbeknownst assistance. Which is to say I copied their homework without asking, interpreting expressions they used in some of their pictures for Eight. A bunch of the rest came from google searches on 'cartoon expressions', and a couple I created out of thin air. I have a feeling of accomplishment and being total crap at the same time. I learned a few things, but my overwhelming sense was my creativity just isn't there. I don't remember exactly which came from where but I tried not to take more than three from the same place, and obviously adjust things to suit my character. Definitely go watch those other artists if you aren't, they are significantly talented.
This was significantly challenging, and it's the second one I attempted. I'm a little surprised, and a little not, that I completed it with the hive nurses. Their design is relatively simplistic, and that was an advantage compared to my other characters that have a lot going on. They just aren't what I think of as my _best_ characters. Their lack of eyebrows and eyelashes was a problem. Initially. After a while I added them if I thought it would help, and decided it's some faint feature which occasionally is noticeable. Their lack of pupils was also a stumbling block; I rather like the idea that it's difficult to tell what they're looking at. However pupils are incredibly expressive and a staple of animation. I cheated somewhat, the circles in her eyes are intended to be highlights.
It's been about 3 days working on this, and the cleanup of the scan was moving into several hours, so I decided to upload as while it might look a little better, I'm not sure it's going to be tons better with additional work. [20180203 Edit, finished cleaning up the scan] The only thing I can envision improving, would be adding eye colour. I think I like the Hive Nurses being a white/light grey, with their collar and horn being white, and their eyes, belly bands and wings being something. Green seems "traditional", a colour for each one might make the most sense, or perhaps the colour shifts like a biological mood-ring. Probably each one gets a colour is where I'll go, it's a great short-cut if I want to do black panels, one would be able to tell which one is speaking by the eyes.

Yes! A couple tutorial examples were "It's all in the eyes, eyebrows and mouth" and I'm thinking. Oh, no eyebrows, eyes have no lids and no pupils so they can't change, and their mouth is hard and always shows teeth when it's open.
Yes... going to have to think. Partially, I wanted enigmatic, unreadable expressions for them, but it's not as fun.

Inscrutable expressions means that other body language and word balloon creativity may have to carry a lot. It can be done-- Iron man has had 40+ years int he comics of artists trying to do so-- but there's also a lot of thought/speech balolons carrying a tone (and internal cutaways).
I hadn't run across this before, so I had to track down the source.

So I'm only a decade late. :P I was kinda hoping there'd be more exercises like this one. Still, the accompanying tutorial is decent, and she seems pretty open to questions and such.
