Chimeras use heavy ferro-fibrous armor for protection, since it is both the only armor plating which provides a protection comparable to ProtoMech armor and cheaper than the standard plating on battlesuits. However, heavy FF armor is extremely bulky, which initially made it useless for the first attempts to build an Inner Sphere copy of the ProtoMech. The solution from IonCore Engineering was simple but extremely rude when compared to the contraptions other companies had: the techs simply removed both the cooling system and the energy grid from the internal framework to make enough room for the additional frames required to hold the armor. But the price for that decision was that Chimeras may not mount 'Mech-scaled energy weapons because of the lack of sufficient power support, and even the support energy weapons carried by battle armor cannot be cooled. This means that Chimeras may only mount ballistic or missile weapons, in other words: it totally depends on ammunition.

Oh my... that's certainly a sacrifice to make... o_O
If I were to sacrifice something, I would prefer speed to armor. I figure, if I move fast enough, armor doesn't matter a bit as long as I don't take my sweet time in downing my opponents. Of course, then all my opponents would need is that one, lucky shot with a Gauss Rifle, uAC/20, Thunderbolt, or whatever... meh...
Heh-heh-heh... I think I'll stick with my BLR-1G, thank you very much... or my Black Python...
Excellent drawing, by the way! I love the detail you put into it! :oD

Thanks.
The sacrifice is not as nasty as it sounds: Chimeras carry battle armor weapons with PLENTY of ammo. A magshot gauss rigle comes with 40 shots, for example. Same applies to the recoilless rifles, while weapons like the machine guns and the firedrake needler carry 50 rounds. Missile tubes have 10 loads (except for the One-Shot versions).
Additionally, Chimeras have the same problem as Protos: they weigh 2-9 tons and cannot cary very much armor: the 9-tonners carry less armor than a Spider (42 armor points maximum!), so anything like a PPC or Gauss Rifle willblow them off the field with one single shot anyway. As for the speed, Chimeras may run up to 130 kph, as the PSI module (the cockpit with the AI supporting the pilot) cannot handle a higher speed and because the chassis cannot carry a bigger engine.

Hehe.
FYI: Chimeras are my house rule response to the Clans' ProtoMechs. But while Protos are oversized battlesuits mounting mech weapons, Chimeras are miniaturized Mechs mounting battle armor weapons. They have a speed disadvantage, may not carry energy weapons, and are more less limited to short range combat, BUT the fact that I used the rules for both support vehicles, battle armor and BattleMechs gave me far more freedom for creating new units.
I have three engine types (fusion, fuel cell and battery) for propulsion, two armor types (standard and commercial) now and four (!!!) additional types I might add later, and the whole catalog of BA weapons. And I also added a few new weapons derived from official weapon types (the support-autocannon for example, which is a BA version of the light AC/5).

Wow... that's awesome! One of these days... whenever DeVry gives me a decent break and I refresh my mind with the basic rules of BattleTech... I'd love to RP in your BT universe! You certainly have a lot of impressive stuff in it from what I've read so far. It's been years, but I think the last time I fiddled with that stuff, my character was a Nova Colonel in Clan Steel Viper who ended up defecting to House Marik, and I'm pretty sure he wound up personally owning a Black Python 'mech, a Battlemaster, and Sylph battle armor... of course, I definitely wouldn't mind starting with a clean slate, as well...

That was the intro, and this is how Chimeras look like:

Wow... I skimmed over those in your gallery and I thought they were some of the newer official designs! I obviously need to spend more time browsing through your gallery along with actually reading the descriptions!
Those chimeras are brilliantly thought-out beautifully drawn! I love the effort you put into your artwork's details! :oD
