Alpha and Omega are the letters on either side of the head and its likely a 'hell hound' or demonic wolf, not a fox but definitely the hands of the devil. I'll investigate this further and let you know my findings. The intention might have been to scare away even more evil spirits than it portrays, common in Pennsylvania dutch country.
