Following the disastrous Arrowhead Incident, numerous HEV-equipped expedition personnel were unaccounted for and subsequently listed as MIA, presumed lost within the Otherworld. The list of missing personnel included one Dr. Helena Ross; Dr. Ross was noted as being "exceptionally positive" and "energetic", but had been involved in several incidents regarding "inappropriate workplace conduct" with coworkers and received reprimands for such on multiple occasions.
Some time after the Arrowhead Incident reports began to emerge of Dr. Ross appearing in unlikely locations and situations. Further investigation revealed that the "Dr. Ross" being sighted could not possibly be the real Dr. Helena Ross- the imposter was sometimes sighted in multiple locations simultaneously or with "duplicates". Furthermore, several minor resurgences of Otherworld activity were linked to instances of the imposter Dr. Ross.
Attempts to interrogate instances of the imposter Dr. Ross eventually uncovered a likely explanation: an unknown entity native to the Otherworld had recovered a number of HEV suits following the Arrowhead Incident and used them to create autonomous agents with personalities modelled after the original Dr. Helena Ross. These autonomous agents appeared, for all intents and purposes, identical in physical and mental characteristics (as ascertained through multiple interrogations and recorded sightings). The autonomous agents maintained a close fascimile of Dr. Ross' personality during most interactions and to only acknowledge their non-human nature under duress or if given no reason to believe the deception would be believed.
Several traits unique to the autonomous agents were recorded:
> HEV suits operate with several safeties and functions disabled, including:
--> Filters (suit occasionally vents buildup of Otherworld "smoke")
--> Automated transponder (activation results in repeated 2-4-1-10 ["Position Overrun"] distress signal)
> Visor display anomalies (cosmetic, appear to reflect "true" anatomy)
> Susceptibility to television broadcasts (exposure to television displays results in hypnotic trance and likely resurgence of Otherworld activity)
Instances of these autonomous agents appear to perform some manner of scouting action, intentionally seeking out human civilization and exotic technologies in order to study them. It is considered likely that the entity responsible for creating the autonomous agents is conducting some equivalent of Project Arrowhead; autonomous agents appear to be actively monitored, explaining their appearances and disappearances as they are deployed and recovered through unknown means.
