Part IV
I had no idea what was to become of me now, would I be granted the freedom to the rest of the ship like Dr. Fraustfer had promised? Or was I too much of a hazard? Having been exposed to Radon those many years ago which left traces of it in my system.
And not only that, what about my life? What was I going to do, what purpose would I serve? This new colony of hybrid peoples all had their roles on this ship, what was mine? I wanted to feel more like somebody rather than something…some radioactive experiment.
I still had many questions which plagued my mind; what was left of earth, my home? Surely the research team who found me was exposed to radiation, and Dr. Fraustfer herself had said that toxic levels were manageable. Were there any hopes of me going back? Or was Earth too far gone?
“What was it like?” I asked her as we were sharing a meal together. I am finally able to work up the appetite to eat normal portions but still not able to consume a lot. Along with it my senses have all returned, making me feel completely normal again; for once in a long time I could smell her, that sweet fragrance of well-conditioned fur and perfume which made me realized she hadn’t lost her sense of humanity.
“What?” she asked confused, taking a bite from her steak.
“Earth…where they found me”
She gave me a puzzling look, staring into my eyes as if I was insane. It made me feel uneasy, as if I was confirming to her that I had yet to accept my new life, and she was yet again disappointed.
“I…don’t know…I wasn’t there,” she finally said after a brief pause, “The research team who found you were part of the archeology team, it has nothing to do with me and my medical staff,” then she added “Branson...the lion you saw a week ago, the man who explained to you about being a hybrid…is the leader of the archeology team”
My brain began to spin, as I remembered that fellow. But then confusion arose, “I thought you said, ‘we found you’ as in implying your guys’ team…you and him…your team” I asked with a hint of suspicion.
“Our work is indirectly related Ray, yours was a special case in which our departments intermingled. Branson is the leader of the archeology team, he would know more than I would as he was there when they got you, HE was the one that found you.”
I knew I had to find him, he was somewhere on this ship and Dr. Fraustfer knew where he was. If there was any hope of going back to Earth and seeing my home again, now was the chance. I needed to know where I came from, to fill an empty hole in my being.
She gave me the coordinates to where his department was stationed, on the lowest deck upon the ship, right next to the flux core: the engine to power the warp drive of the ship. I took the tram alone, she had said she was far too busy and had to update the report of my medical file, but gave me clearance to wander the ship unsupervised. I knew without a doubt the fact I was still minutely radioactive would be catalogued; like a conviction that will never go away for as long as I live.
I passed several patrol officers along the way who kept a watchful eye on me. One I could tell was a fellow wolf, old aged and wearing a synthetic armored suit of some type. The weapon he carried resembled the automatic rifles from my time, but this thing was far more superior; it’s shape and make was far sturdier and it had an iridescent blue glow of energy, I knew had to be a plasma rifle of some type.
I finally made it to the Archeology sector of the ship, and I knew immediately where I was as all around several others were carting large samples of inorganic rock, soils, and samples from planets. Looking around I seen a lynx and a weasel chiseling away at a chunk of rock which evidently had contained some relics embedded within. In another area, a husky and a German Shepherd were looking over a hologram of what appeared to be the exploded view of some ancient city.
I then saw him, that tall and lean robust lion; he was wearing small framed spectacles and waking from table to table examining each pair of individual’s samples as if a science teacher checking upon his students. His gaze then soon shot up and met mine and a frown formed on his muzzle as his proud mane appeared to stand up on end, like a dog raising its hackles.
“What are you doing here?! Dr. Fraustfer hasn’t given you…”
“She has given me clearance,” I interrupted, “and I’ve come here to talk to you”
His brow raised, and he immediately looked down at his wrist; a small microcomputer looking device was cradled upon his arm, he flipped up the screen and began to type something in it. After a moment he shook his head, “Well congratulations, but you have no business here and as you can see we are busy, I have no time for you right now,” he said condescendingly.
“I want to know of earth!” I boasted stoically, demanding he give me the time I required to answer.
He bolstered into a laugh and along with him several others who heard began to slightly snicker and shake their heads.
“What?! What’s so damn funny?” I demanded again.
“Boy, forget about your past! There’s nothing left, what part of nuclear war can you not get through your skull? Earth is in ruins! The sky, the land, everything you once knew is gone, non-existent and riddled in smoldering ashes,” he threw his paws up in resignation.
“Surely there must be SOMETHING left!” I countered
“Yes, brimstone, fire and a wasteland! The earth is dying son, mother nature as you knew is reclaiming what was hers. There’s no lush green fields full of pretty daffodils swaying in the spring breeze…no! No beautiful mountain lakes or forests! It’s nothing but ash and dust, the diabolical manifestation of hell scorning the world you once knew! There’s nothing to go back to, nothing to know…forget about it and embrace your future, the sooner you do that, the better you’ll be.”
I couldn’t believe it, I didn’t. Where did all these artifacts come from then? If there was nothing but ash and dust like he said, then how are they looking up relics and artifacts which seemed all too familiar? Once again, I felt betrayed and being lied to!
“Why is everything a lie around here!? Since the day I woke up I’ve been lied to! I know there’s something left of earth!” I scorned, pointing to the table of artifacts which held remnants of stone and brick rubble, obvious building materials of my former home.
He simply laughed again, “A lie, huh? You think I’m lying to you? You honestly don’t believe your world is gone do you? Well…perhaps I can prove it to you! We have still images and videos from our expedition…”
“I want to see it for myself! To stand once again on the ground I once walked 300 years ago!” I said vehemently, shifting my clawed finger from the table and jabbing it in his direction, “and YOU will take me!”
He didn’t laugh this time; his body tensed, and his eyes narrowed, “You truly want to see for yourself? It appears being frozen has damaged your brain more than we thought!” this witty remark once again made the archeology team chuckle, and made my blood boil with anger.
“I will have to get authorization from the captain to take a Rapid Response Terrestrial Shuttle back to Earth, and this far away into space I doubt I will get it! We would need to refuel the shuttle before making the journey back as it will take every ounce of available energy in the shuttle’s own warp drive to make it there, let alone undergoing the necessary precautions and safety briefings for our time on Earth!”
“What sort of precautions?”
“We would need proper protective gear and breathing apparatuses to shield us from Radiation exposure, Earth is not stable or safe without it! You wouldn’t last 5 minutes there without proper gear.”
“I thought Dr. Fraustfer said the levels were safe enough to venture to Earth…”
“They are SAFE enough WITH gear! You honestly thought your planet was hospitable again? HA!” he mocked. “It won’t be for another couple of billions of years at least! Which is why we say just FORGET IT!”
A part of me didn’t want to believe, but another part of me had a feeling it was true. My ears folded, and tail tucked with despair as my eyes lowered to the floor, “Damnit!”
“So, do you still want to see?”
It was the hardest decision of my life. Would it be worth risking my life in the attempt to reconcile my past by exposing myself to the very radiation which killed every living thing back home? I finally made my decision after a moment of silence, staring back into his eyes and barring my teeth,
“YES!”

My submission for the January 18th Thursday Prompt. This week's prompt was centered around the key word "Diabolical Daffodils" given to us by our fellow writer
yelleena
It's a continuation of my story of Ray, a man turned to an anthro wolf via genetic experimentation who woke from a coma and restored from Cryogenic freezing who is coping with his change in body, his new life and the realization that his home planet, Earth is left in ruins from Nuclear Fallout. He doesn't want to believe it, as he's been lied to up to this point so he holds everything he's told with a grain of salt, even the hellacious state mankind has left their home planet. And so he wants to risk life and limb to see it for himself!
Hope you guys enjoy this story! I enjoyed writing it and I thought it felt well with the prompt. If you'd like to participate in the thursday prompt then you need only give
