Name: Mew
Classification: New specie
Type: Psychic
Number: 151
Evolution: none
Length: 1 meter (including tail)
Weight: 4.5 kilos
Description: Mew originally meant 'Mystery Entity Wilkinson', after Thomas C. Wilkinson, who discovered the creature, but is now considered the specie-name. Mew is a very exceptional creature, in that it was first discovered when it was already preserved on formaldehyde. Wilkinson was appointed curator of the Kanto Museum of Natural History in 1895. His first assignment was to make a complete inventory of the Museums artifacts. In the course of making this inventory, one of his assistents presented him with a glass case with what seemed to be a foetus on formaldehyde. The assistent was unsure what species the foetus belonged to. Wilkinson immediately saw that this creature was unlike any he had ever seen, foetus or not. In 1898, he published a paper about it, giving it its acronym, but it was largely left unnoticed. Mew dissappeared again into the archives of the Museum. It wasn't until 1957, that a group of researchers began investigating the strange creature. Wilkinson helped them in what way he could, but died in 1959 at age 103 before their findings were published. The team discovered that the specimen didn't resemble any known pokémon at the time. Although superficially it looked like a foetus, its organs seemed to be fully grown. It has very large brains for its size. DNA-research wasn't done on the specimen until 20 years later. The article published as a result hypothesized Mew as a 'living fossil': its DNA had so much overlap with the 35 species they compared it with, they believed it to be a living example of the common ancestor of many pokémon. Since then, there have been ongoing searches for a living Mew. There have been many sightings of Mew around the world but, as these things go, they increased exponentially after a description of the creature was published in scientific journals, and as good as all sightings are considered worthless. Nothing is known about its lifestyle, habitat or wether the specimen preserved is representative of the specie as a whole. It is still unknown, despite much research into the Museum of Natural History's records, where the specimen came from or who preserved it. Cults have arisen with Mew at its center, because some people believe it bears such a resemblance to a human foetus, it must be either a god, an angel or an otherwise important and/or supernatural sign. Seen here are the specimen (note the tail: it was broken by whoever put it on formaldehyde) and the most popular artist impression of a fully grown Mew (dating from 1960). The specimen has no hair, but the artist has portrayed the live specimen with a downy layer of blond hairs. This has lead to some Mew-cultists to refer to it as 'the golden pokémon'.
I just LOVE mystery animals. My favorite animal of all? The giant squid. We have never seen a living one, people. How mysterious can you get?
