Horse Anatomy and Tail Braid study
A horse anatomy study... unfinished and rough - heck, I didn't even sign it ^.^,
A couple of anatomy errors were pointed out about my "Perfume" piece, and so I thought I'd polish up my horse anatomy with a study sketch =). I think it did me some good... I think the legs and the tail were the parts I was 'fuzziest' on.

The shoulder is the one big glaring conformational error that I see...a horse's shoulder isn't upright like that, it's supposed to ideally be at a 45 degree angle. Because of the straight up-and-down angle on this shoulder, his neck is also pretty well FUBAR'd, since it's attached to the shoulder.
Also, this horse is WAY camped out. :P The hind legs shouldn't be so up and down at the same time they're so far back...they should, on a correct horse, be pretty straight up and down unless moving, or parked out.
Otherwise, pretty cool!

Did you know that after Da Vinci died, they found literally HUNDREDS of sketches of the back legs of horses? :) It's a tough part of the anatomy, so don't worry if it takes a few tries to get it right. Everyone who's ever drawn horses struggles with those legs...but thanks to modern day photography (Da Vinci had to use a live horse, and most of them move around, queering the art!) it is possible to learn 'em. Don't get discouraged! :D
The back legs..if they were on a real horse, that horse would *not* be bred.
Dogsoul is right about everything, especially the neck and shoulder. The hindquarters aren't full enough really, and the proportions of the legs make me think 'pony'. Otherwise, like he said, it looks pretty cool.

sickle hocked, week but, short hooves, pasterns too long for the hocks, short coupled. Other than the shoulder the fore legs are good.
In jugging a horse the head needs to be perportional to the body [you did that well].
The top line of the neck should be straight. [except in a stallion ]
The shoulder and the pastern [bone from the hoof to the hock] should be at about a 45% angle. They should be the same angle in any case.
The center line of the front leg should touch the ground just behind the front hoof.
The chest and barrel you have right.
The coupling or space between the end of the rib cage and point of the hip should be more than one fist and less than two fist widths.
The croup [ top of but] is from level to rounded depending on bread [arabs are quite level]
The hock should be striate up and down; a vertical line at the rear most point of the but should touch the hocks but not bisect them.
The hooves should be about as long as the pasterns [pasterns go from hoof to hock]
A book on horse shooing will have a LOT of information on how a horses legs are put together.

Instead of pointing all the "off" things, I'd like to point of some the stronger things with the sketch. ^_^
I really do enjoy the horses head. The eyes catch my attention most of all. I also like the braided tail and how you did the mane. Very nice. It gives me a sence of indavidual hairs rather than one huge mass.
Also, your joints themselves and shading are well composed.
Your deffinitally on the right track with this. Just keep it up. Like Dogsoul said, even DaVici had a hard time with horse anatomy. ^_~
Good luck and thanks for sharing.
