Ah, so the amulet was actually designed to let the transition be gradual, and merge the two egos together into one powerful, intelligent dragon. By removing the amulet, the original dragon psyche gained more power, possibly by feeding on Virmir's magic. Most interesting, indeed. I can't wait to see what comes next.
I don't think so.
I am pretty sure that this has a lot to do with the interlude comic he did based on how an ego as big as Virmir's can actually be possessed.
Under normal conditions, the Virmir Ego (To be henceforth referred to in my post as Virmegotaur) is too big to be possessed by normal forces that do so.
However, when under the conditions of "Splitting Headache" and as such separated from somewhere around half of his ego, his ego is subsequently closer to what one expects a normal overly-confident fox ego to be.
Now that Virmegotaur is about the size of an extra-large ego (Think stretch limo, instead of a Double-decker bendy-bus that is his full size ego), such ego can be in fact fit inside a vessel. Such a vessel would have to be quite large, of course, but about the right size to contain a dragon (Dragons are known to have fairly large egos).
So, the Dragon possession ego probably figured out how to shove the weakened Virmegotaur into the pendant, and by removing the pendant, Lucile has basically removed most of Virmegotaur from his body, leaving the dragon ego free to possess him and romp around as dragon egos are known to do.
All this is pure speculation, so feel free to mock my suppositions as you see fit.

Actually it is a most intriguing theory. Granted, the image that Virmir posted to explain why the dragon ego couldn't supplant at first was showing the Virmir half's ego, not the total ego, at least I'm pretty sure it was. That being said, the rest of your theory of the possiblity of being shoved into the amulet does seem possible.
