You know that "t" thingie you draw in the middle of your character's head because you picked it up from your 1st grade book fair "How to Draw Franchise Name" book? Well it actually means something. It's supposed to show 1) the curvature of the sphere, which is why you need to draw it CURVED instead of STRAIGHT UP AND DOWN, and 2) where the center line of the sphere itself is, which is why you're supposed to use it for 3/4 views instead of head on or profile or whatever the hell the hypothetical top guy was going for.
Also, stop thinking of the thing that constructs your character's head as a circle (or a square depending on what you're using.) It's a sphere (or cube? I guess), which is a 3D shape. Circles are the things kindergartners cut out of construction paper. You'll achieve a lot more depth if you draw a shape with perspective, and it'll look more like a shape if you utilize the lines for what they're supposed to be for.
