I'll go with the former, too. There are desert foxes living out here. Coyotes hunt in packs, yet the desert foxes survive. Coyotes are very smart, so the desert foxes must have "unspeakable crafty intelligence."

Some of the desert foxes around here have gone high tech: they live in heavily armored steel burrows. There are hundreds of miles of pipe from abandoned mining operations scattered about the desert and the mountains. Some of the desert foxes live in pipes big enough for them but too small for a coyote to crawl into. It would take a bulldozer to dig them out, and the 'yotes haven't figured out how to operate bulldozers, at least yet.

I think Wile E. Coyote tried to run a bulldozer once, but it didn't end well for him.

I'd love to catch sight of some desert foxes, but around here they can only be found at the zoo. Coyotes we've got, but they're skittish and the further into the foothills the housing developments go, the rarer it is to even hear them, much less see 'em. :(

One of my neighbors puts out water and dried dog food for the coyotes; that has completely eliminated their eating her chickens. They are very smart and certainly appear to understand the deal.

I know... they never pop up except when you don't have a camera. There's a family that lives somewhere in my neighborhood, but usually the best you can see is the flick of a tail disappearing behind some shrubs.

oh, actually, i realized right after i posted that this is a channel island fox. i thought it was a western gray. yeah... Texas. But yeah, mostly these guys are way too chill around people.
