Venti felt the anger as it burned in his chest. It filled his limbs, and smoldered in his head. How easy it would be to give in, to use the strength his anger could fuel against the source of it all. It would be too easy, though.
One, two, three, four...
Samuel sat there, unmoved by it all. He waited patiently, quietly, for Venti to speak. He mentioned how Venti had inherited his temper. Where were the signs of it? Venti saw none, none which were obvious. The man didn't even seem to have roid rage, and he admitted to taking steroids regularly! No, if Samuel had actually acted aggressive or hostile, it would be a reason to lash out with more than just words.
five, six, seven, eight...
Say something, dammit! thought Venti. Give me some kind of excuse so I can leave! Why wait for an excuse, though? Why didn't he leave now? Why hadn't he turned his back on this man who finally entered his life? Who admitted he gave him up for adoption because of hatred?
nine...ten.
"I want to hate you so badly right now," Venti said softly, "but I can't. All I see in front of me is a man who's filled with regret."
"I've regretted my decision for thirty-five years," Samuel said, looking up at the sky streaked with the red of the setting sun. "After I graduated from college, I felt the loss more than ever. Instead of having one less person attending my graduation, I had two."
Samuel locked eyes with Venti, and there he saw the anger in the older jackal's eyes. Instead of it directed at him, Venti saw it was all on his biological father. "You hate yourself, don't you?"
"I did. I still do, but seeing you here in front of me replaces it with shame. Something I could have avoided if I'd been more of a man and accepted that bad things happen to good people."
Venti looked at the table, then the street, the sky--everywhere but at Samuel. "Why are you here?" he finally asked.
"I came here to apologize."
"I don't know if I want to accept it."

i was scared of Venti's rage at first, it felt so unfamilar. It was darker than any hate he had shown us before this point, I feared the jackal was going to make a mistake that he'd regret in one way or another, for a very long time. But like always our large black, red and gold friend pulls a Sage on us at the last moment and comes to his senses, and manages to unclutter the clusterf@ck he was presented with. An amazing chapter Greg, the emotions really poured over me on this one! ACK! 8 more!
