Flight EF-37 nonstop to Sydney, Australia...Now Boarding" came the announcer's voice over the PA system. A pair of black ears twitched in response as the canine head they were attached to looked up curiously.
"Sounds like our flight is ready." said Sly as he stood and stretched eagerly. A shaky feeling caught his attention as he looked to see the tail of the feline that was sitting next to him lightly wrapping around the tip of his. It was shivering slightly. The male looked to his right to see something he hadn't expected to see. His cream furred companion was shivering slightly where she sat in her seat. "Hey Luck? Are you okay?" he asked concerned.
Luck was sitting almost stock still. Her hands clenched the handle of her overhead bag in her lap. A sharp gasp left her near quivering lips as she turned to see a white furred hand now on her shoulder. She looked up to see Sly looking at her with a worried look on his face.
"Nervous?" he asked.
"Y-Yes...I've never been on a plane before...And..." she trailed off slightly.
"And what? What's wrong?" he asked.
"It's just...It's a really long flight...over water...and I...I can't swim." she admitted sheepishly.
A soft chuckle left his mouth at those words, and drew a narrowed look from Luck's eyes.
"You don't have to be embarrassed about that. Those are both very common fears. But don't worry. There are plenty of safety measures in place on board the plane. Like the seat cushions being floatation devices for instance." offered the wolfox.
"They are?" she asked curiously. Her ears perked up at that sentence. She hadn't known this. Sly nodded knowingly. "But...what about like crashes and stuff? You hear about them on the news sometimes." she asked next.
"Yes crashes do happen. You do hear about them on the news. But you know what you don't hear about on the news? The hundreds of other flights that happen every day that go smoothly and have no problems." he countered with a smile.
Luck sat there for a moment. She hadn't thought about that. "You're right." she replied.
"Besides that, flying is the only way to get to Sydney in the time limit for the trip. I mean you can still choose to stay if it's too much for you." said Sly turning away slowly.
"No!" said Luck almost in a shout as she grabbed the male's wrist. Her head was down. And though her eyes were closed there was strength in the grip she held on him.
Sly smiled again as he turned back to her and took her hand in his. She looked up at the gentle motion as he pulled her wrist up toward his face. "Then come on. I promised you a trip remember. This is the first real vacation you've had the chance to go on. Lets go my sweet Kitten." he said as he rubbed the back of her wrist against his right cheek before he turned it to kiss the back of it.
A dark blush burned on Lucks face from the gesture. She sometimes forgot how much of a charmer the wolfox could be. "D-Don't make fun of me Sly. I know your tricks by now." she half stammered as she stood up and pulled her hand back. She started to walk, but as she did the roar of a jet engine filled the room suddenly. The feline gripped her suitcase tighter as she stood in place in response.
"You okay tough girl?" came Sly's semi mocking voice behind her. She turned a look to the male that surprised him a little. A genuine helpless look resounded in her sparkling yellow eyes that actually shook him a little. Luck may be a tough girl, but she still had her weak moments. This was obviously something she was struggling with on a deep level.
What happened next took no thought. There was no debating from either of them. Sly embraced Luck in a tight hug and held her close. "I know you're afraid. You don't have to hide it. One of the most important things to me as your Master is your well being. I will not force you, nor will I let you force yourself to do something that you are unable to do. But you are not alone on this. I am here. Trust me, and know that I am serious when I say that I would risk or even trade my life to save yours. You may not know how to swim, but I do. I can teach you the motions to stay afloat if you like." he said comfortingly.
"I know...I...Yes Sir...I know you would protect me...You have in the past. I have no reason to believe you won't in the future." she replied.
"If I could I would fly you to Sydney myself. But I don't have near enough stamina to make it there, and not enough time to do so. If you want to go back I will not think any less of you." he offered.
"No I...I want to go...I just...Can we stay like this a moment longer? Feeling your warm body against mine is comforting right now." asked the feline looking up at him softly. The blush was soft on her face again.
Sly returned a soft smile. Luck was always putting on a tough face. And even if it had faltered slightly here, he knew she would be able to conquer her fear. She'd been through a lot in her young life. A little pre-flight nervousness would only slow her down a little bit.
"I...I think I'm good now." she announced a moment later. Sly eased his embrace and looked down at the shorter female. The look on her face was calmed.
"There's the confident Luck I know. Are you ready to go?" he asked.
"Yep. Let's go." she replied, her blush still light on her face as the male turned to pick up his own suitcase. "Thank you Sly...Sir...You're the only one I trust and feel safe enough to show my vulnerable side to. You've earned that trust just through being yourself. You never make me feel weak or laugh at my insecurities when they show. Thank you for that. I hope and pray that we have a lot more time to spend together. You, me, 'Neki, Sakura, and Pips. All of us together." she whispered lightly. The soft words were drowned out and lost to the passing noise of the busy airport terminal.
"What are you spacing out for? You coming?" asked the wolfox turning to look at her now.
Luck smiled at the wolfox as she started to walk. She was very grateful he came into her life. And she hoped she never took him for granted. She would make sure that he always knows how much she appreciates him and what he's done for her. Just as he always makes sure she knows how important she is to him, and that he appreciates her not just as his pet, but as his friend.

Seems Luck has a few fears that she hides from others, but sometimes we have to overcome things we fear in order to get things we want.

When you've been flying on a (semi-)regular basis since childhood, it's easy to forget that the act of getting in a plane isn't routine for a good part of the world's population. Here's to hoping that Luck finds that the act of flying is (much) more enjoyable than she expected it to be.
Woooo, Straya!!!! Though Sydney isn't nearly half as good as Melbourne Little factoid as well, on long haul flights that go over water, they actually provide life jackets instead of the seat cushions. I was quite surprised when I flew for the first time in the States and the seat cushion was the floatation device!
That was quite the nice story, lovely moment between Luck and Sly with hhim comforting her. Fear of flying is quite common and pretty understandable, and he did well to soothe her. Hope she went ok on the flight in the end.

You are absolutely correct. They are in very little danger in actuality. However that fact does not mean much in the face of irrational fear. The same way you can tell a person who is afraid of dogs that it is safe because the dog is behind a fence, and the person with the fear will still cling to the fear that say the dog will escape it's confines as an inevitability if not a highly probably outcome.
True but one part was that she can't swim. So take water out of the equation. He brought up the seats being flotation devises that calmed her a bit, but that is a double edged sword. If she stoped to asked why there is a need for them to be it would panic her more. Mentoning his powers is much more reliable and asks her to trust in him vs trust a pillow.
The question then is why would she have to ask why flotation devices would be used? When trying to console or calm someone you usually don't have the luxury of picking the perfect thing to say for the situation. Put yourself in Slys shoes for a sec. He knows that Luck is very aware of his abilities. If she is still scared then what would be the point of mentioning them? Like I mentioned before about the dog fearing person. Irrational fear almost never listens to logic. He bypassed the plane fear and went to the water fear because that was what she was focused on at the moment. Sure hindsight would let him pick the perfect things to say, s'why they say it's 20/20. But Sly isn't perfect. He makes mistakes and doesn't always handle things in the optimal way call the time.
