Failure is a 'known'. If he fails, he just goes on an evaluation flight and keeps trying. Victory sets him off into the unknown, where he is all on his own with no instructor. It's something he can't turn back from.

Sometimes multiple teachers helps. Everyone learns differently. Ian is actually a little bit TOO much like Chucky.

I only had one instructor for my private license, he was quite good. I'm basing the different learning styles more from my experience as a flight instructor. I was exposed to sooo many students who learned differently.

You are absolutely correct. And, lacking multiple instructors, a very experienced instructor knows multiple ways to guide the student in accomplishing the skill at hand. Handling a sailboat is a lot about "feel" also. One has to feel how the boat is affected by wind and wave action and understand how a particular boat responds to those factors as well as it's response to the helm and sail trim. And then there's the task of teaching a novice how to back an 18 wheeler....

Instructor experience is such a big deal. Both Ian and Huff are first year instructors and we're seeing their different styles. Had Ian been a second year instructor, he probably would have done a better job guiding Chucky.

The celebration comes after the solo flight. You're right, there is no chance to celebrate. If Ian signs Chucky off to solo, he has to go solo right then and there. No turning back, no relaxing beforehand.

I still remember the day I did my solo flight, right after 12.1 hrs of logged time with the instructor. I had landed with full flaps. We then taxied back to the start of the runway. My instructor got out, and I took off, forgetting to reduce my flaps to the first notch. The airplane literally floated off the ground when I got moving.

My time was some where around there too. Yeah, if you try to take off in any configuration other than what the book says, the airplane lets you know real quick.

No I didn't. I don't think it was a tradition at my flight school because I don't remember other shirts hanging up in the FBO. But then I saw it other places and I knew of the tradition. You?
