Well, dapple grey. But I've drawn the black knight, so.. :P

I am just incredibly curious about the background structure! It looks wonderful, but I don't know any teqchinque yet that can create such an effect. ^^; Uhm... maybe the area in the upper right corner? Where you have a bit of magenta as well as lilac?
Oh and believe, I will make sure to oggle this closely at EF. ;) I promise not to leave any nose prints on the glass though,

Unfortunately I can't do that, since the piece is tiny and if I made it available at that big of a size it means I would pretty much be releasing the printing version, which I don't do, I'm sorry. There will be bigger horsey pieces done eventually which I then wouldn't mind making available at larger sizes if they were themselves larger. :)
First off, just AMAZINGLY wonderful lines on this guy! Looks so alive - like it was an oil portrait done from a sitting photo!
And, I also have to mention... you did a GREAT work on making the lines fill in with grays all over... Never got a grip on how to do anything like that, myself... but I'm hopefully going to learn. Did you find that tough to manage with the water colours - keeping it all where you want it?

Before doing the background I use masking fluid, otherwise it would be all over the place indeed, because of the amount of water used to keep it smooth. But as for the horse himself, it's just trying to be precise. My best suggestion would be to layer a lot and wait for each layer of color to dry before darkening the shadows or adding more color. This takes longer, but will prevent the medium from getting too out of hand - watercolors are very good at messing things up. XD

That's about all I remember of having tried to use them... but then I was never good at drawing / painting... I was a big-time musical type.
But, wow.. what I find interesting is that the way I'm colouring things digitally is about the same as what you just described: start with a colour and them darken it.
Maybe I really HAVE learned! HUZZAH!! (*SMIEL!*) Thanks!!

It looks like a Boulonnais! *whines* I want it! I will never be able to pay the price... Will it be in the art show at EF? It really looks like my favourite horse breed! Which is... my fursonas horse breed as well... Oh I want it so badly... =/ I will totally bid on it.

Aww, thanks! And yes it shall be! I start my bids at very reasonable prices (and this one comes with a cute frame, too) and horses are usually not too popular, so I am pretty sure it won't go extravagantly high. (I don't care if they don't sell as well as foxes, I LOOOOVE drawing them! X3)
MINE! :D So happy. ^_^ It's so wonderful in real live and the frame is adorable. I am a bit sad it didn't went for more, sad for you because it would have been worth more, but I was lucky. ^^; I didn't sell too much stuff myself, but I still could afford 'my' knight.
:D I DO love him! *snugs* My mate and me, we'll have him in our bedroom on the wall. And maybe someday, I will find the right moment and/or moood to talk to you and not act like a big idiot. ^^; I'd so love to talk to you more... but always busy. I know how it is to be occupied with commissions all the time and you have so much more work than me. Just didn't want to be a bother at all.
Wah, you could have totally sat down and chatted with me! I am not some scary unapproachable person at all, I am very friendly (if I come off otherwise it's probably that I am just dying of tired, but I will still not be rude, just kind of quiet - usually I am not all quiet XD). There is always next year. :)
I think this background does look a bit distinct. The texture doesn't come from anything special like salt though, I just used a lot of water and the pink I used in it is kind of weirdly low-pigment (I use cake watercolors, haaate tubes!) so it made this neat texture as it dried. The little bit of black I added in when it was still wet helped make the spotting more distinct, too.
It's done on Fabriano 100% cotton hot pressed paper, it has very little texture in it and is just as good as Arches imo, but is much cheaper at my art store! I always buy from that brand now, it's awesome. The smaller sizes come in blocks glued on all sides, so that is neat because it prevents buckling of the paper as it gets wet pretty well, better than taping it down.
