This is a piece from my jewelry class. I made the blade out of a piece of welding steel I bought and then forged an edge onto (yes it is sharp). The hilt is cast using the lost wax casting process, and is made from copper. The whole piece is about 6 inches long. I am going to make a sheath for it so I can wear it with any of my costumes.

I can say from experience that I learned lots of things in my intro class on jewelry making that would help an armor smith like how to cold forge metal, how to make jump rings and how to solder jump rings (along with how to solder lots of other things). If you lives in Austin Texas, I could recommend a couple of good classes to take.
