I took it for 4 years. It's not as difficult as English would be as a second language (I'd guess), but it has a lot of rules that make it kind of hard.

Yeah, that's a Little disadvantage. Having a third article, plus the akkusativ vs dativ were doom for me.

Ugh! Now I'm having bad High School flashbacks. All my German teachers were mean old ladies.

I took German for three years in high school. My first year teacher was an old lady, but she was fantastic. Spoke/taught "Hoch Deutsch." Pretty much all of the German I retain to this day was because of her. Thing was, she retired after my first year.

Second year was a string of substitute teachers, most of whom couldn't speak German, one was a Jesus freak who tried to convert the class. By the time third year German came around, we finally had an actual German teacher, but my science lab interfered with one of my German class days, and that just ruined it all for me.

Now that is interesting, I've never heard of anyone that said German is easy to learn. And especially not that it would be easier to learn than English ^^
Most people have a hard time with the gramatical gender since that can seem quite random.

Oh, I wasn't saying German was easy. It's not. I was saying it's probably not as hard to learn as English would be (as a second language). Both are complex languages.

And, yes, the grammatical genders can be difficult.

Looks to me that if you go in knowing English its a bit easier. Don't they both have the same root?

Never stopped me. I'm already trilingual and an English teacher. And English isn't my first language.

Well, it's been scientifically proven (by badgernomics) that including badgers increase cuteness in a pic by... about sixty percent.

Brand name badgers three times as much, and also with enough padding so that there's no cuteness overflow!

I've seen "thank you" in German written as "danke" before. Is "danke" a more casual version, like "thanks" in English?

Just Danke is usually OK. Danke schon is more like "Thank you very much".

I've seen it both ways. Not sure if one is more accurate, but you're probably right.
