#12: Saitama: One-Punch Man

And finally, it's time for the much anticipated (or not) 12 Days of Christmas: Heroes Countdown and to kick start this little event we have the world's most lackluster hero, "One-Punch Man" or... ya know, the world's most lackluster hero who can still be qualified as such. I dunno, I don't know every superhero out there, there may be ones that surpass Saitama in pure mediocrity, who knows! What I do know is that our caped baldy earns the lowest rank on this list for just that; being mediocre! Which is of course the entire joke of the series... a joke that many don't seem to understand at all, sadly.
While One-Punch Man is pretty new to the fray, it's one that I enjoyed enough to add into this countdown... but I sort of have mixed feelings about this series. While I like the overall look of the series and acknowledge it as the joke that it is, it kind of falls under the same issue as Bobobo, in that it's a comedy series written by someone that isn't very funny and what I really mean is that the execution is very off. I think it has a lot of potential, but it's kinda muddled inbetween trying to just be funny and actually trying to have a story... which it kinda fails at. That major failure and yet somehow it's saving grace is in it's main character. What do I mean by that? What I mean is that Saitama is the best thing about the series... and he shouldn't be!
One-Punch Man is a great slap in the face to Japanese culture of always having the uber overpowered main character (I'm looking at YOU, Dragonball Z) and how in truth, it makes a character extremely boring. While this is funny, the problem with One-Punch Man is that it's still super focused on Saitama to the point that the plethora of other characters in the series serve little to no point whatsoever. Every situation is just waiting out the clock until Saitama comes in and punches something which... only really stretches so far. Don't get me wrong, I love Saitama (clearly, as I added him into this thing) but the problem is, is that I literally only care about Saitama. Well. Him AND Licensless Rider but that's a story for another day! In any case, Saitama proves to be the only interesting/fun character in the series and the only one I want to see more of, which is a problem when he's made to be boring and uninteresting.
Once again, it sounds like I'm really shitting on a series when in truth, I don't dislike it it's just my own critical thinking which I'm unable to turn off. I just think it could be a lot better if it was better executed... but that's me!
