If you're in Edinburgh, you're a little ways north of Kendal, England, where my family castle is. :p Though depends on how long your trip is.

I lived in Edinburgh for a couple-3 years when I was a kid. Been in that castle several times.

I guess we'll be checking it out later today! :D So far, Scotland's been awesome.

Maybe next time I visit Europe I'll see Iceland!

Wasn't able to get INTO the castle when we were in Edinburgh a few years ago, but did walk up to it at least. Had a wonderful view from our hotel.

Really must get back there some day.

If you get a chance, there's a great pub on the Royal Mile that serves good haggis, neeps an' tatties.

I tried a bite of that at the place we're staying at. :) It didn't taste too bad! I guess it's all about the prep and seasoning.

We had a lovely fish and chips at this place called 'Monteith's', and the waitress there gave us all sorts of history on Edinburgh.

Yeah, haggis really has an undeserved bad rep. It's a loose meatloaf, really. And by the time it arrives at the table, you can't tell what internal organs were ground up to make it.

According to family tradition, my Dad's ancestors lived near the Edinburgh city walls (inside or out isn't clear), and our name comes from that.

Not sure where my lineage goes as far as being Scottish is concerned. I'm only 1/6th anyway, but it would be neat to find out. :)

I'm probably 1/8 to 1/4. Dad's great grandfather was a trustee at an English-owned work house (debtor's prison). He 'stowed away' on a ship bound for the U.S. because he'd heard slavery was abolished here, and figured he had nothing to lose. That was in the 1870s -- don't let anyone tell you the Brits didn't keep slaves. They did, and they were white.
