Native American legend says that Fox tried to steal fire from Man, (After Coyote brought the gift of Fire to Man.) and his legs got all covered in soot running through the ashes. His ears were blackened when Fox rubbed his paws over his face as he tried to clean himself. Thus for his crime, he has forever been marked this way.
I don't know. Personally I feel drawing black ear tips, "Gloves and boots" on the vixens in my cartoons makes them look sexier.

Some say that I'm just too lazy to paint the paws in a darker color, but to my defense, I use to say that if I painted the paws dark, it would make it hard to make out the fingers and toes!
All foxes also have more or less prominent markings on the side of their muzzles, but I stopped drawing them because I thought it looked like the vixens had moustaches!

I understand where you're coming from. I can't help but recall all those times I had to draw and ink all my fox characters like Muse, Notion, and all those Garetta fox-taurs. I did cheat a little by adding white lines or lines in a dark shade of gray to indicate where the digits were separated.
