i been involved in the fandom since like early 2000s

i will say it was not all rose tinted

back then it was firmly popularity-based and there was a firmer sense of furry "culture" where now you have people who just, yeah i'm a furry i draw animals sometimes that's it

back then there was still a lingering sense of it being a subculture with its own customs and ideas and ideals and it was still pretty tightly bound to otherkin/therianism

and part of it being tighter-knit and focused heavily on being better than the mundanes (holy shit i have not had to type the word mundanes in years) meant a lot more inclusivity even for people who were clearly like, zoosadists basically

it is why you get people closing ranks and protecting certain popular artists who use lines like "it's just another case of a woman getting what she wanted and then changing her mind" to justify coercing people into sex because gawsh gotta protect our brothers (did you know at one point a non-insiginificant amount of furries called one another brothers and sisters sight unseen the sense of community was that strong and that wasn't necesarilly a good thing)

other furry customs we are good to be rid of: that sense of community meaning people felt entitled to physical contact from random furries (hi you're a furry i'm a furry that means i get to hug you don't say no!) or even sex from other furries (i have a heart condition and if you don't let me have sex with your friend i will literally die i can't believe you're going to kill me!)

also back then the most "dark" furry art you'd get was consensual bondage and everyone acted like that was their secret evil dark side but it was really just 40-50 year olds drawing boris valejo wannabe girls tied up and vaguely harem-ish and, i swear to god, calling all women "femmes"

in the old fandom there was an expectation of physical intimacy as the norm. ostensibllllly it was because "well we're all animals and animals love contact!" but in reality it was because a lot of the 00s era furries were lonely nerds with no social skills, who had grown up on a very decentralized internet, where it was really easy to pick and choose what you interacted with because there was no twitter, there was no one from another subculture interacting with you unless they invaded your irc channel or whatever

so you have these people who grew up in a frictionless vaccuum free to come up with their own social cues and they settled on "hugs and scritches are normal!" and it was a Thing where you had to specifically state publically if you were not into touching and this is exaggerating most people weren't crazy insane but if you were an early furry please do expect someone to try to hug you now and then even if you have no idea who they are (apparently especially if you're in a fursuit)

to the point where the furcode (do you know about the furcode) had a section where you declared your opinion on hugs

the fandom itself wasn't centralized and it was split into a ton of different websites, most artists had their own website and a VCL backup. some centralized artsites existed but they were usually i want to say grouped by theme or by groups of friends? and commenting on art was basically nonexistant compared to this.

to say nothing of a ton of the furry fandom existing as god Zines where you bought your furry pictures and stories to read

and the wars with those evil fursecuting goons at somethingawful (in reality most furries just patted themselves on the backs for being More Mature and trolls would sometimes spam gore and stuff back when there weren't a lot of protections against this? it was reallllly wild west but with low consequences)

there was a stronger sense of Community and especially Identity where now a furry is just someone who draws furry art and there's NO assumptions you can make past that but back then there was a firm sense of being a community of being a furry because, like i said, before the internet was all forced into communication by corporations you could just disappear into some corner of it and never leave or realize you were being weird by insisting someone can only have one fursona (this was an actual argument at one point can you imagine being told you could only have one fursona)

please understand that back then there was an ongoing war in the otherkin community about if you could be therian to an animal that didn't natively exist to where you were born

please imagine otherkin phrasing being otherkin as if it was being trans and oh god

please imagine using your winamp to tune in to your favorite furry website's internet radio and listening to them play music and banter about furry things. please imagine logging onto flayrah.com on shitty highschool computers to read the latest news about furry cons and big furry productions.

please imagine the giddy excitement of seeing a furry character in some piece of media and whispering about it like it was a secret other people wouldn't get

please imagine people adding you to their messengers because they found your messenger linked somewhere on some disparate site and you talk like you're best friends because you're both furries and a day later you're master and slave and a week later you never speak again and that's just kinda normal

back when i did secondlife like a decade ago there was not a month that went by when someone didn't decide they were in love me?? i feel like especially lately the internet's gotten a lot better about there being women on the internet but a decade or two decades ago guys acted like a fucking unicorn had walked into the room and they all slowly reached behind them for their bridles so they could catch this rare thing and be the lucky one who wasn't prison-gay (i don't have hard numbers but my general experience was a lot of people who identified as straight at first ending up in gay relationships and a lot of that i think was genuinely people discovering their sexualities for sure but there was also a sense of horny young furries willing to take any affection at all)

also a ton of the grayfurs were clearly Gor inspired and holy shit there was so much Gor overtones in the furry bdsm community it was terrible god fuck

but, you know,

you also had reams and reams of shitty furry webcomics which no i guess i'm not nostalgic about that

it's hard to tell what my nostalgia is if it's nostalgia for my young simple highschool days where i felt like a culture rebel playing furcadia with my half-formed adolescent brain or if i actually miss some of the old senses of community where you could go to someone and go "hey i'm a furry too!" and bam you were already halfway to being friends

altho considering how many of those friendships i kept, how i only occassionally have weirdos hit on me anymore, how the loss of the fandom as an insulated subculture also forced me to stop being a socially bizarre idiot and learn how to be a person,

i'm not too upset with the modern fandom tbh.
