For
triprat of his Kobold character
This took me a very long time, but the result is pretty cool. I tried for an 80s RPG look, referencing a lot of old pictures and learning a bit about artists... In the end, I feel like I didn't add enough hatching to quite sell the look but like the result overall. It does feel like a decent enough emulation though... Overall, a fun experiment.
I've tried to emulate some of the 80s jankiness, here. In particular, the cobblestone walls and pillars are not really a proper, historical design and are sort of intentionally "off." They were referenced from various old illustrations, though. I also defined entirely too many coins, since every bit of treasure is often drawn in my references, for some reason... More current fantasy artists would probably abstract it a little more, as defining every coin is time consuming and the result is quite busy. My hands hated me for it, haha, but it's all in service of a particular look
Of course, as much as 80's RPG art has sort of a reputation for being janky and not very good, a lot of it is incredibly impressive. I've gotten especially fond of Larry Elmore, who has an incredibly distinct 80s fantasy look that's polished to a shine.
Oh, and of course, the joke here is that bigger dragons are more powerful. I thought that was a cute idea. ...I suppose a real 80s kobold would be a dog, though.
