November 20, 1944 09:00 Tarawa Atoll (Japanese occupied territories)...
After four hours of continuous Naval bombardement, the men (and woman) of the 2nd Marine Division advance upon Tarawa Atoll in their LVT-1 amphibious transports. Many of the LVT-1s are caught in the reef and come under heavy machine gun and mortar fire. Little to no armor makes it ashore, and many of the Marines are forced to abandon their LVTs and make it to shore on foot. Esther's squad lands on Red 2 beach and fights to push back the Japanese lines. A lone Japanese soldier swims out to one of the disbaled LVT-1s out on the reef, and opens fire on the Marines with one of the vehicle's .50 Cal Browning M2HB machine guns. Several Marines are killed before the position is re-taken.
November 21, 1944 08:00...
The Marines who have moved inland after securing Red 2 now must deal with the new Japanese machine gun positions that have sprung up overnight. The Marines are pinned down until 12:30 when they are re-enforced with heavy machine guns of their own. The Marines then march south to take the airfield that cuts the island in two.
Here we see Esther on the second day of the Battle of Tarawa Atoll, her unit having just seized a Japanese mortar pit several hundred yards inland of Red 2.
Happy Thoughts,
