Anything is possible.
There is such a debate raging over A.I. as if it is a thing of the future. Trust me - it's already here.
My brother told me a story - a couple who did not own a cat, wanted to test a theory about whether or not their smart phones were eve's dropping on them, so they began talking about what type of cat food their non-existent cat would like. Within three days cat food commercials began showing up on their face book page.
After reading this story, I would recommend watching this video: https://autonomousweapons.org/slaughterbots/
It is very well done, and it will scare the living crap out of you.

A very insightful piece. I agree with much of what was put forward, though I'm of two minds on the AI front. The video was interesting although as speculation I think it makes some loose assumptions. There's lots to think about and I really like the way you got the ball rolling. Thanks for pointing this out.

It's coming. I'm not sure how much of it I will see in my lifetime but it's coming. The first movie I remember about something like this was 'The Forbin Project' - 1968 (?). The computers they designed took over the world - and for the whole movie you kept waiting for them to figure out a way to shut it off - and they never did.

Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970).
The computer was named colossus, and when it was connect to Guardian (Its Russian counterpart) that was the end.

All of you folks need to sit down and read Dan Brown's "Origin." In spite of all the hints, the conclusion is not what you'd expect. I read most of it in one evening...and finished it the next day...and had no clue what was coming.
And Vixyy, with regard to "1984," not only is the "state" got their eyes on us, do does everyone with a smart phone. That scares me worse than the Feds.

Very interesting and insightful, The ending was especially well done. The first part is kind of eerie for me, since my own thoughts of humanity can be very much of that sort, but that is nothing unusual in this day and age.
I've often thought that the advance in some aspects of technology should be halted for awhile (especially phones and weapons), until we can be become more responsible, less violent. But man is instinctively an irrational animal and an invasive species.
Its not enough that we already have a satellite called 'SkyNet' floating around in space. Its as if the miltary, arms manufacturers and elite read books like '1984', 'Fahrenheit 451' and films such as 'The Terminator', 'Soylent Green' etc and end up taking the wrong messages from it, as opposed to the intended message.
On Orwell's book, I first read '1984' during my Sophomore year of high school( and I have it in my personal collection, along with Animal Farm), even back then...all I could think was "Its already happening."
Speaking of dystopian themes, have you heard what's going to be happening soon over at the FCC...?

I've always said that man was his own natural enemy. I'm not sure why this should or would be but it certainly has been proven through out history. Would someone use this 'new' weapon? I have no doubt. History again proves the point. I was shocked when learning that our scientists wanted to use nukes in Alaska using the lame excuse that they were going to be blasting with them as building tools - when in fact; they truly wished to study the effects of radiation on the local population of native Indians.
I do believe we will get through the future intact, but it is going to be very painful. man will never go down without a fight.
The best thing that could happen to us is an invasion from outer space because they we are all 'just' Earthlings.

Very interesting read and i'll agree with the others very insightful as well. I often wonder if an animal was as intelligent as us, what would he think and say? And your story here pretty much is the answer! And a sly, wise fox is the perfect one to be the subject of said philosophy.
Automation is a fact and it is inevitable that we will destroy ourselves with it or with the forces of power and our eagerness to play god. And the saying holds true, 'nature finds a way!' after all the meteor that killed the dinosaurs (supposedly) was a catastrophic event which supposedly killed a great portion of earths inhabitants, but some still survived and evolved. Nature finds a way, and it will be no different after man is good and gone; unless we change our ways and start living in harmony with the earth and not try to overcome nature.
The thought of us finding another planet somewhere to survive on HAH! there's a reason it's called science fiction. Maybe one day in the far future we may succeed but it won't be in our lifetimes.
Keep up the great work V!

Heh, it is and isn't here just yet (can't cram enough AI - and enough power to power the AI in that small a package), but his phone might have been doing the face-recognition for it.
Motion detection would be the easiest of the 'AI' steps to work in, but most of the rest would need to stay in touch with some sort of 'brain'. So if you can jam their signals - which they might then home in on to kill the jamming!
The biggest problem for anyone that makes them is keeping someone else from finding a way to take control.
Sad part is our government and others (and some corporations) are dumb enough to make them (heck we're there, just add the popgun and done!)
At least with a human in the loop they can say 'oops - wrong target' and abort. (and how many James Bond movies had the little toy car blow up the big one?

Pretty interesting. There's no doubt that there's some really dark stuff with technology nowadays, or rather, how people digest technology; it feels like people have a lot of technology at their fingers but don't really know how to use it. Honestly, I feel that technology is good, it's just that we need to learn how to understand and properly use it. Kinda cyberpunk, don't you think?
