Yeah, his dad's behaving like an asshole. First he doesn't give Lyle credit for having a steady job, then he assumes he's going to dump his current girlfriend eventually. Now he's yelling at Cot over something that's not flat-out disrespectful to him. Seriously, my dad would raise his voice if I said something that was openly disrespectful, but not something like -that-. If Cot had said something like "He does a better job raising me than you," then that would be something a parent would yell at a kid for. But this guy's blowing it out of proportion.

Dutch, I'm sure, somewhere down the line, something could happen that could somewhat redeem Cot's dad, but right now I'm at a loss at what that could possibly be.

My dad could be a hardass from time to time and wasn't always around. As an adult I can understand why Cot's old man is acting like a dick, or at least I've got some idea why. He strikes me as the sort who has high expectations for Cot; regardless of whether or not their fair or realistic expectations; and he probably either had to live up to those same expectations in his own childhood; or held himself to those all on his own. If he's anything like mine; the problem is he has nothing but spite for anyone who doesn't live up to those expectations, and once that lacking has been established he won't change his mind. Lyle has matured during the last few years; but I'm willing to bet that since Cot's old man saw Lyle at his worst; that's all he'll ever see in the cat unless he shows a drastic change that even someone as pigheaded as he appears to be won't be able to deny he's better than he once was.

I don't condone the mindset if this ends up being accurate; but on some level I understand it.

When I was a kid I would've thought dad to be a bit of an ass. Now as a dad, I get his point of view. It's a hard line to walk. You want to be their friend, but you want what's good for them too, and often those don't go hand in hand.
