A commission for
nukatiger of his black and purple tiger character, at a rocky coast on a calm night..
This is my first fully digital piece at a large scale involving a complex background, and I learned a number of new things in Photoshop that made it interesting and different than working traditionally... (Don't worry, I'm not moving into digital art as a primary medium, but its good to be versatile)
The sketch was done traditionally, and then it was inked and colored up in Photoshop. I'm not sure how many hours this took, but somewhere around 25 probably.

Great blend of character with the background. Reminds me of the stretch of beach behind my friends house on the southern Oregon coast. We used to sit out on the rocks, usually only around the full moon so there was just enough light to see. A full moon in the pic would have made the lighting make more sense, but beautiful wither way.
Wow, that is truly beautiful. I may not have known it was digital if you hadn't said so... because ALL of your stuff has the same attention to detail. Something I think you did really well in this piece is the lighting... night time lighting can be challenging. GOSH I wish I lived by an ocean :-D
You amaze me in that you can be so good in two very different media.
On a side note (and I'm not trying to steal this person's character), this looks very much like a Rakshani with that unusual colouring. I keep trying to convince artists who draw them for me that they are aliens, not tigers, and come in many colours, but the two colour ones that I got at Anthrocon both came out tiger orange. *sigh*

Thank you =) Its interesting learning a totally different medium. I still have a lot to learn, but that 'basics' are the same, I suppose.
Thats something I didnt know about the Rakshani - (or did I? I think I've always drawn them with normal tiger coloration) I also like the odd colors for familiar patterns ... =)

I think that you've only done orange and white furred Rakshani, but here's an example of other colours - http://www.chakatsden.com/chakat/Im.....inished800.jpg I might get you to draw Baneth for me sometime. She has dark red fur.
Internal monologue: "Oh, those clouds are gorgeous, I love how smooth... hey, is that digital?" *scrolls down to description* "Yup! Awesome!"
This is amazing - so much detail! Stunning work as always :) I particularly like the texture of the surface of the water and the splash against the rocks. Lovely!

I do it mostly the same way that I do it traditionally - I start with blocking out the basic darks and lights - and then I work from dark to light, drawing in the shapes of the fur in the direction the fur goes in each section, paying attention to the length of the fur on the different parts of the body (longer for chest, shoulders, shorter for face, forearms, etc. Lastly I add in the darkest darks and the lightest lights to make it 'pop' - but its a good idea to work on it very zoomed in, and then zoom out frequently to check your progress and adjust as necessary =)
