Yeah, storm intensity must be the key, though luck is a major factor, too.
Yesterday, I left my camera shooting until the card (8GB) filled up, at an average rate of 8 frames/second. There were at least three major skyflashes in the area it was pointed to in that time, but none got recorded. Lots of bird flocks, though :)
