Paper Cut

A myriad of cards laid strewn across a young man’s room. On the dresser, layering the floor below and even more atop his bed.
The room was in such a disarray it was impossible to think any order can come from the chaotic mess. Ryan saw otherwise. The twenty-three year old was hard at work perfecting his newest dueling deck.
After losing to his guild rival, his undefeated streak has been broken. By a newcomer no less. It invigorated him to be even better and more strategic than before.
The Yu-Gi-Oh cards all laid around the room so Ryan could view them all up close, think over a strategy, and see if that card would fit into his new deck.
So far, nothing has come to mind and he’s gone back to the drawing board many times by now. Still, he persists knowing that he’ll defeat his rival and earn his title back at the guild.
“Maybe a cyber-dragon or two?” he said to himself. Then shook his head. “This spell card combo would work” he says adding another to his small pile by his feet.
He went on and on like this until his pile grew considerably. He tried balancing out everything into the forty card deck limit while keeping his strategy.
“Ok cool, I have room for a special summon. Definitely am gonna need some muscle to take on that red eyes he’s got” Ryan thought.
Ryan got up from his position on the floor and walked around his card messy room to look for just that card. He has many options to choose from. The boy has been a card collector since he was a kid.
His parents used to complain about the excess of cards in his collection. This made Ryan buy a Yu-Gi-Oh card holder and deck box. His mother thought it to be such a waste of money. His father encouraged his hobby seeing it as modern day gambling combined with chess.
The tournament he went to sometimes has really nice cash prizes. Nothing to call home about but definitely something that’ll put a meal on the table. Even with Ryan’s comfy job it was nice to have some spending money every now and then.
Ryan continued to examine nearly every card in possession to no avail. No card satisfied him enough to consider adding it to his deck. It was either too under and overwhelming.
“Hell, I can think this over later” the boy says as he leaves his room, and the mess, behind.
He’d be working on this personal project for the better half of the day. His stomach growled its protest to this as he walked downstairs.
Living alone now, he doesn’t have the luxury of food being ready for him whenever like at home or college. Then again, he liked doing most of the cooking at home anyway.
Looking through the cabinet, Ryan pulled out some pasta noodle and sauce. He reached into fridge for the thawed ground beef he pulled out earlier. It was going to be a spaghetti night.
***
Sitting down at the kitchen table to eat, Ryan saw first his room was not the only place his hoard of trading card spilled out from. All across the living room, an assortment of cards lay in cases. Some loose ones hung around as well.
“I really should get the guys together for some more cards against humanity” he thought amused. The last time he hosted, he laughed so hard he almost peed.
Coming out of his thought Ryan saw something reflected in the light on the kitchen island. It was another card under his book.
He got up from the tablet after finishing his dinner and took his dishes to the sink. Coming closer he sees the dusty old book and picked it up. The dust particles flowing making him cough a bit.
Looking down his eyes widen as he sees the perfect card for his deck. The right balance he was looking for. Both strong in attack and defense with just the right about of muscle to pose a threat.
“Hello ol Blue Eyes” he said picking the card up. Tossing the book aside, Ryan is oblivious to the old “spell” book he used to read for fun. He and his friend one time got drunk and chanted spells to bring the card to life.
He must have left it there all those weeks ago after that. He snorts thinking back to how silly it was thinking magic would bring a card to life. Well, he was drunk after all.
After getting back up to his room, he added the card to pile pleased to finally put together a deck he feels is finally finished.
Ryan gets up to go to his nightstand drawer and pulls out a deck box to put them all in. He’d bring them to the guild tomorrow. He put them in one by one til he got to the Blue Eyes and accidentally pricked his finger.
“Shit” he swore under his breath bringing the appendage to his mouth. The cut drew blood but not much. It was enough to drip on the card though.
As soon as the drop hit it, the card glowed a luminescent blue.
“What the hell” Ryan said dropping the card like it was on fire. The card dropped face up on the floor showing the dragon glowing.
Ryan got up from where he was sitting on the floor and backed up away in fear. This was definitely not a normal occurrence.
The light beaming from the card spread outward in the arm and extending like a vine. That vine of light continued spreading until it reached a shaking Ryan and wrapped around his leg.
Ryan tried to shake it off but the light wasn’t tangible and continued to engulf his leg. He started shouting out as more of the light surrounded his other leg and traveled up his heel.
Every part of him the light touched made him feel stiff. He tried moving his legs but found them to be immobile. He struggled even more as the light touched his hands and he couldn’t feel his fingers. The petrification of body continued until the light covered him head to toe.
Then the light faded slightly allowing Ryan to move his body.
“What in the hell was that” he said as soon as he was able to speak again. He didn’t have time to dwell on the thought. The stiffness from before spreading throughout his body like the feeling of needing to stretch.
Ryan watched in horror as his fingers extended outwards into deadly claws. His pinky finger melding into his ring fingers as they turned into piercing talons. His thumb relocation to below his palm.
His skin coloration was changing from his normal skin tone to a chromatic blueish white. Ryan’s eyes widened in disbelief.
“No freaking way” he whispered to himself. He grunted in pain feeling as though he had the worst headache of his life.
He clutched his head as it grew out along with his neck. He growled as his teeth grew into deadly fangs. His cheeks widened as two pincers grow on the sides his face. His hair fell out and his ears shrank away to nothing. The discoloration continued to cover his body changing it as it spread.
His chest expanded and grew broader as plate-like segment formed along his torso down to his abdomen. As it reached his thigh, his tailbone grew out. The segmented appendage rapidly growing to full length as Ryan reflexively whipped it behind him.
He tried to call out or speak but all that came out of his mouth was a chorus of growls and grunts.
Ryan’s stance change as his knees bent forward and his heel continued to elongate. He found himself soon standing on the tip of his sole and toes.
The chromatic armor continued to cover layer after layer of Ryan’s diminishing human skin. As it reached his back, he felt another wave of discomfort. Two claw-like figured grew out of his back and spread outward. As it grew, an inner layer of armor forming around the visible wings. The layer grew thinner, the closer it was to his back.
Ryan closed his eyes opening them again to reveal azure blue ones staring at the room around him. His nose and mouth started to push out combining together and his jaw elongated. Ridges formed along the back of his back ending just above the length.
Ryan craned his longer neck looking around at his new body. He felt strength and power like never before. He could crush any opponent that crossed his path. He thought to the puny human rival that bested him with a red eyes and let out a mighty roar shaking the foundation of the fragile home.
Position his feet, he pounced into the air using his massive wings to carry his body weight and broke a hole through the ceiling. He flew off into the night searching for opponents to best with his newfound power.
