"You look tired," Haavard said as he sketched some lines, glanced at Venti's prone form against the wall, and sketched more on the paper.
Venti grinned ruefully. "Haven't been sleeping well."
The sounds of the pencil scraping against paper filled the silence for a moment. "Insomnia?" Haavard asked carefully, as if afraid he might upset Venti.
"Kinda. Sometimes I'll have this recurring dream, and when I wake up, I can't go back to sleep. Had it last night, and since I had to go to work a couple hours later, I just stayed up."
"Is it a bad dream?"
Venti shook his head, but realized Haavard's attention was on the sketchbook. "No, but it's frustrating. I'm on the beach trying to get to someone, but I can't see who it is. Don't know if it's a he or a she. For all I know, it's a creature we were never meant to know, and my subconscious is trying to protect my sanity." Haavard looked up, the expression on his face one of alarm. "Of course, I'm just kidding about that last one. Lovecraft stuff only exists in paperbacks and bad movie adaptations." He sighed heavily, letting his chest expand as he inhaled, held the pose for a moment, then exhaled, tensing his abs. Haavard's pencil then flew across the paper as he furiously tried to capture the moment.
"You're a tease even when you're not trying to be," he said.
"I know, but I wish I knew what my dream meant. What's the deal with me not being able to see the figure or reach it? I don't suppose you know any dream analysts?"
Haavard shook his head. "I'm sorry, but I don't." His expression then changed slightly. "But you work in a library. Maybe you can find books on dreams?"
"Haavard, if I didn't think you'd pass out I'd give you such a kiss right now."
The pencil leapt from Haavard's fingers, skittering across the rug towards Venti. "I-I wouldn't pass out," he said.
Venti grinned, a touch of mischief in his eyes. "Are you sure?"
"You have a boyfriend."
"Damn, you called my bluff. You're getting good at this game of ours, kiddo."
