Yup. It was a series of movies from the late 70s/early 80s as well as a manga series. The latter has never been released in English.

FINALLY! someone ELSE who remembers this. I first saw Unico on the Disney Channel. Second movie (best in my opinion). Took me forever to find a copy of the movie (not so legal sources).
