Maybe there could be a story about how the empire's love for Flurryheart, let alone her being a young alicorn, somehow turns that love into fat.
Maybe her parents could be normal-sized, but a lot of stuff has to be reinforced and specially-built for the young Flurryheart.
Of course, maybe there is a young stallion in the empire who grows enamored with her, and 'young love' blossoms between them. Perhaps even, Cadance and Shining decide to put her on a diet, and the young stallion sneaks her sweets out of love.

I think any of those premises can work. Heck, I'd reccomend combining elements from the last two. Imagine how funny this scene shown here would be with the parents being thin and desperately wanting the same for their daughter, but her getting fat anyway. Flurry's smug face just works with a line like "Having trouble there, Dad?"
