Still not sure if what they did was incredibly cheap or downright genius.
The story acts like a self-insertion fan-fic. Not exactly the most clever kind of story and it pretty much writes itself.
But it does show they really know their fanbase and is pretty much the penultimate form of Pandering to it. Which is kind of brilliant on itself.

I should also note that Oneshot and Undertale are exceptions to this rule for me, because your very clearly intended to use your own name. But yeah that's a pretty good reason, most games where you get to name your characters usually have a canon name for them anyway, which renders your custom name pointless except for having some fun with the dialogue. xD
