I sometimes think about how best to handle hair on pokemon - lots of them have manes and the like. I personally think it keeps their looks most consistent to model the hair as meshes anyway. A little more cartoony, but that doesn't really bother me.
Doing the hair for real makes me want to add details elsewhere where there's really no reference material - scales and the like
I haven't actually tackled one that has obvious long hair yet.
