One More Word and'll Kick Your Grass (PokemonMysteryDungeon)
So, again...Pokemon. Ugh...ok...deep breath...lets do this.
So, the next main title in Pokemon is...another follow-up version. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. I think the last in the main series I played is either Platinum or Black or White...or...wait...UGH...why can't they just number sequels like normal people....
Ya know what, alright. Today US and UM come out....so let's talk about Pokemon Mystery Dungeon!
============
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and it's incarnations have similar gameplay (to each other)...and it's background is a curious approach compared to what most of Pokemon is. In the show and main games, we usually focus on the trainers and their Pokemon fighting. PMD actually goes about it differently...
Apparently there are no humans. You play as one that's transformed into a Pokemon for...some reason or another, partnering up with another Pokemon in a series of events that have you go dungeon diving. Now that in itself is interesting...getting a Pokemon view on things, the thought that there are no humans in the world...
Yeah, that IS weird...so do Pokemon come from a different world or...are humans invaders?
Good question, don't know if we'll ever know...
But overall, the game-play is rather simple. You dive in dungeons, getting items, experience, and even some more Pokemon to tag along with you. It's got the basics, sure...and it might be enough to keep you going.
Unfortunately, it can get repetitive. The dungeons are small, filled with way too many tight corridors that offer a train-ride of either nothing or stifled combat.
Personally my journey started in either Blue or Red, where I came out as a Charmander, and things were interesting for a time...but then sorta fell out of it.
Then came up Gates to Infinity to see how the series evolved. While graphics and some combat improved, the game still suffers from dungeon corridors and small rooms. It surprised me when I entered my first "field encounter" in some maps, which switched to the panel combat system when contacting an enemy. Personally, I'd want more of that. More open areas with combat initiating on contact, both the freedom of moving about at your leisure, and the grid combat when you want it.
I like some randomness in video games. It keeps things fresh and engaging, and different occurrences can keep drawing you back for more. But you have to be careful of repetitive features that can make things become dull.
Ditto for randomness. Maybe the story pays off in the end, guess I'll see. So far, it seems to be getting rather intense surprisingly...
In the meantime, I loaded up a simulation to try and fix some repetitiveness and dragged Rigel along with me. Unlike the game, I could pick any Pokemon I'd wanted in the selection process and....well went with Quilava (afterwards, kicked myself for not going as an Umbreon). I remember in whatever-color-it-was, that I liked the look of Quilava back then (Cyndaquil was too cutesy and Typhlosion was too big and brawny). And to counteract any water types (though *cough* doesn't seem type advantage even matters anymore, looking at you Pokemon XYZ), I had Rigel be a Snivy.
Probably felt weird not feeling like you have a tail?
Yeeeaaahhh...that was weird....
Probably my first jiff in Gates to Infinity was that smart-alec Scraggy you take to the cleaners (as in knock him out) early in the story. The loser still thinks he can talk smack about your team even though you handed his sagging rubber pants thing on a platter. Sure, he gets roped into a service by that Quagsire guy, but he still thinks he can mouth off to me on our way to our next mission. I put him in his place though, with a Brick Break to the face.
Had my eyes closed for that...was that before or after he tried to guess what our Team name was?
What? Ours is Team Ardor...must've not heard, what he'd call it?
Uhh...I don't think you want to--
WHAT?
Think he called us...Team...Diapies?
OH THAT LITTLE RUNT!
Prrrroooobably didn't help that the first Team Skill we got was...PP Restore...
That was in a random box some guy bashed with his head! And YEAH, I get the joke! Where is that PUNK! Where's a BRICK!?

I remember watching bits of the OVA on Cartoon Network, I actually liked it more than the regular series (The Pokemon are easily the stars of the series and we don't have to look at or listen to that whiny Ash).
I've never looked at any of the Pokemon Spin off games (Except Colosseum, which I got the Strategy Guide for, and it doesn't look that good either) but the weirdest I saw was Pokemon Ranger. Based on the commercial, it looks like you catch Pokemon by drawing a circle around them with the stylus.

The original concept of Pokemon was about "being a master" by "catching them all"...but the it quickly breaks down with every new addition to the series...the poke'count keeps increasing...more badges and gyms...he's never going to make that goal.
I actually have the guide for that too and BOY...does THAT walkthrough take less than 30 pages...but ehh, it is about the Colosseum...not an actual story. BUT, have to hand it to the graphics at the time...and the new protagonist. Wes is an older, sorta anti-hero trainer, with an Umbreon/Espeon pair that makes hims sorta stand out in the range of the franchise.
Funny enough I actually went through the entire game working with Umbreon and Espeon as exclusively as I could Always wondered what Wes' story was with those two...
