“I don’t know… it just feels different.” He mutters, slightly embarrassed as he pats the flank of his horse. It did too. She laughed, the shaking of her head causing her silky brown tresses to bounce. He tried to deny it but he looked forward to these rides more than he was willing to admit. It was becoming harder and harder to find excuses to spend time with her. Her father called her to more and more of the family business. Trade deals brokered where she was asked to attend. Negotiations for prices and goods. She was smart. She took it in stride and on more than one occasion he’d heard her father congratulating her on a job well done. He was happy for her of course. But he missed the times they used to spend. Training in the courtyard, laughing under the stars, playing tricks on the guards when no one was looking. Soon enough he knew she wouldn’t even have time for these rides. No matter how much he knew they both looked forward to.
“You’re being ridiculous. There’s no difference this time than any other. Father said it would be fine. Besides… I’ll bring my sword and you’ll bring that silly swallowtail of yours and no one will stand a chance regardless.”
“Ely… when has your father ever been ok with us riding without knowing where we are going?” It was almost as if her father was setting them up to be alone. He always kept a close eye on his daughter. There was nothing he cherished more. “You take care of her and be back by dinner.” He’d been warned just before patting him hard on the shoulder and leaving them to their preparations.
“Maybe… he’s decided I only need one bodyguard.” She smirks, brushing her hair out of her eyes. “Now let’s go… We’re wasting daylight.” She grins playfully and pulls herself expertly into her mounts saddle then kicks it lightly. “Unless you can’t keep up!”
“Damn it, Ely!” He laughs as he jumps to his own saddle and gives chase. Their horses’ hooves are thunderous on the cobblestone as the two rush through the streets. Guards laugh as they pass, sharing an inside joke that everyone but the two are in on. “You’re going to get us in trouble!” he calls after her, hearing her musical laughter ringing back to him as a response he urges his mount faster as the city streets give way to open road and she veers to the right out into the green fields. His blood pounded in his ears, heart racing. She never seemed more herself than in moments like this so her having these times made him happier than he cared to admit even to himself.
Her hair flips behind her as she stands in her saddle and they race on. It was freedom and they both loved it. The thunder of the hoofs, the wind in their face. For a time the world was simpler. Unable to help it he smiles as she slows to a trot and then pulls to a stop. “You never could catch me.” She laughs as she ties off the reins on a nearby tree.
“That’s because you always cheat.” He quips, doing the same. The wind rustles in the trees, the smell of spring floats in the air and something else. His ears twitch as he glances around. “Ely… I think maybe we should go. S-something isn’t right.” The wind shifts and his hackles stand on end. The smell of fire and death. “ELY!! NOW!!!” he makes to jump onto his saddle as arrows fly through the air. One glances off his armor and he lets his momentum to carry him over. Elysia pulls her sword from its sheath on her saddle and ducks down, helping him up.
“What the hell?” She asks looking around.
“Dunno… but they don’t want us to know they’re here.” More arrows fly and the horse before them jerks and whinnies. “Run! The woods will give us some cover.” He shoves her towards the nearby tree line and begins to run himself, arrows chasing them the whole way into the woods. The sound of tireless pursuit tears through the woods behind them and he pulls out the two halves of his swallowtail, fixing it together. “We’re going to have to fight.”
She skids to a halt and wheels. “Who’s reckless now?” Her blade glints in the light, greeting the first of their surprised pursuers with a slash to their throat.
“I like to think it’s still you.” He grins, cartwheeling at the next brigand, slashing him twice before he knows he’s dead. They begin a dance, weaving between the trees, their movements a fluid blend of death and artistry. She stabs, ducking back as his swallowtail slashes through the air. Another attacker falls. The trees offer the cover they need and the few arrows that are fired bounce harmlessly away or stick in tree trunks.
“You would? Would you?” she grins, following his latest slash with a slash of her own that drops yet another. “What about now?” she asks as her sword arcs over his head and cuts down a brigand who would had snuck behind his guard.
“Still you.” He smirks, rolling to the side to block and then cut down the attack of another who sought to cave her head in with a wicked mace.
It could have been a matter of moments or hours. Neither can tell. The world is whirling blades, death and the bond that causes them to move as one. At last it is over and the air is silent. They stand back to back, panting. Their bodies covered in bruises and thankfully small wounds. A smirk teases at the edge of her lips as their tails intertwine. “Father told me this was your last chance. Said if you didn’t come to your senses I should move on to some other suitor.” She laughs as he looks at her in complete confusion. “You sure know how to show a girl a good time.”
