The Eastern province of Copperdark's heim, Hessony, had largely been ignored for years under Matriarch Bertholda's rule. When Mariselle came to power, she dissolved the territorial agreements Copperdark had formerly had with the native Weirdling clans of Hessony, and declared that anyone who could work and defend the land would be named a Ladamme, a Land owner.

A colonization of this previously untapped frontier was quickly underway, with individuals of means scrambling to establish Cantons of their own. Resistence from the weirdlings was inevitable, and agents of the Highcourt were ever watchful to ensure that the Ladammes of the new province followed Copperdark law; colonization was a tempting prize, but a difficult one to obtain.
