I think you're pretty spot on with your method - comparing bits and pieces to various references. That's what I do at least. I think I have difficulty blending it all together though. It sometimes has a sort of 'stamped' feel to it. I dunno how to explain it.
Oh man, motivation haha. That's a whole other devil. I get frustrated too since so much time in studies are spent looking at what's wrong and trying to figure out how to make it not suck. Thankfully I've gotten to the point of realizing I can't wait on inspiration, I just have to buckle down and do it.
