One morning, LeiLani was coming ashore from collecting Oysters when she felt a terrible gust of wind wash over the beach. The heat that followed terrified her, and the sound of an explosion rocked her to the core. She turned to look and saw that an American Cargo Ship had exploded just off shore. The US Navy had been using her island as a staging area for supplies and troops for their campaign in the pacific for a few weeks now, and she'd already become friendly with some of the sailors that frequented her village. But this transport wasn't carrying fresh Marines, Fuel, or Ammunition. This transport was set to return to Pearl Harbor, where several of the men of her village would board another ship to the Mainland United States. They had volunteered to join the Allied War Effort as American Sailors, and this ship was their first step in such a journey.
She ran to the docks and ripped the binoculars off of one of the MPs and looked at the ship as it began to roll over. She could see that her fellow villagers had begun to get in the life boats, or jump clear of the ship. The sailors on the ship originally were scrambling to save their ship, before getting to the life rafts themselves. She felt a small amount of relief until she saw a glint in the distance. A Periscope.
Panic turned into relief, which then turned into anger and a desire for revenge. The Submarine that sank the ship her fellow villagers were on was hanging around, waiting for more prey to stumble by. But she was not going to let it happen.
"Take me to the enemy!" she screamed at the MP, who just stared at her and responded "All we have are a couple Magnetic Limpets"
"I'm not repeating myself!" She snapped back.
Within minutes, the two were in a motorized boat heading towards the submarine. They passed by the sinking ship LeiLani could read the name on the bow, "The Red Pearl of Hope", and in the distance she could see another ship coming towards the area. She didn't know what it was, but she didn't care. She had a Submarine to take care of.
When they reached the area, the MP told LeiLani how to use the Limpet. "Once the mine is attached to the hull, pull this plug out, and swim for your life. The fuse will go for one hour before it goes off. Should be plenty of time to get away."
"Alright" she responded as she took the mine out of its package, and started searching for the sub.
The periscope had long since been pulled under, but the Submarine was still shallow. She dove in, the mine in one hand, and swam towards the conning tower. She could see a big red and white Japanese Flag, and the pain looked fresh. Something told her to place the mine on the Imperial Flag which the 'clang' of the mine attaching itself to the conning tower told her the mine was secure. She pulled the plug out as instructed, and began to swim for the boat.
Topside, the MP looked for her to come up, and after a couple minutes he began to fear the worst. Until LeiLani burst through the surface just a couple dozen yards away. The MP directed the boat towards her, and she got in. Within moments the other ship that was coming towards the area had gotten recognizable. It wasn't a transport, she could see 4 large guns, each with their own turret, on the deck as the ship made a hard turn, and the men onboard were scrambling towards the stern of the ship as thick black smoke rose from its two funnels. On the bow, she could see a large "460" in white.
"We need to go" The MP said. LeiLani just gave him a nod, and the two returned to shore as quickly as possible. But before they did, an explosion erupted out of the water, and moments later, the Submarine had emerged from where the explosion came from. The ship that arrived turned away from the island and began to aim all four of its guns towards it. Sheets of flame and smoke erupted from each one in rapid succession as eruptions of fire and debris came from the Submarine. After a few minutes, the ship stopped firing, and sailed towards the Japanese sub to pick up survivors. The Submarine rolled over on its side, and slipped beneath the waves.
As she watched the submarine sink, LeiLani suddenly felt exceptionally tired. The adrenaline that kept her going this long had run out, and she fell asleep in the boat.
Sometime later, she woke up in her hut, with her blanket draped over her. Inside the hut, she found a large assortment of letters, gifts, and food items seemingly piled into her Hut. She looked at some of the letters, and found that they were from the sailors on the attack ship, which was named "USS Woodworth", many of them were thanking her for her bravery, and congratulating her on her Submarine 'kill'. Others were from her friends that were on the transport, thanking her for getting payback, and telling her that they will return one day soon.
"They are much braver than I" She said to herself as she looked out to see the sun had almost completely set.
War had come to her little village.
