Join the Resistance! (Sonic Forces) - A Rigel Rambling
So today marks the release of the latest Sonic game in the....series? No, probably easier to just say franchise, because I honestly have no idea if there's any continuity in the series since the numbers stopped coming.
Sonic Forces
Playing with the idea on "what if the bad guy won?", Sonic Forces begins with Dr. Eggman having taken over the 99 percentile of the world already. That right there begs the question...Sonic bro! What were you doing!? I mean, personally, I could guess a few things on that (Sonic doesn't exist in this world and this is a different Sonic, he was gravely injured by SOMETHING and was out of action and thought dead, or maybe he suffered a huge loss (and by this, I mean person) and just couldn't fight anymore (until the Avatar showed up).
Anyway, recent games have pitched "modern" Sonic and "classic" Sonic together. Which is...kinda confusing. So is it different versions of them...or is it an older/younger version...or...what's with that? But whatever it is, it's happening now.
Even more confusing, some of the antagonists from previous games that were once in the good guys (some-what) seem to be on Eggman's side again. Talking about Shadow and Chaos here. Info seems to point that they and the others have their own reasons, and hope that's explored further...
And a big new addition is curb-stomper, Infinite. Bearing what may be a Ruby more powerful than the Chaos Emeralds (see Sonic Mania), this guy beats down Sonic like he's nothing and is proving to be the deadliest antagonist the franchise has ever seen (up there with Mephiles).
Another big feature is the Avatar, a costume made character who's joined the resistance against Eggman and is the key to fixing things. Why? Part of the mystery. Maybe they have a connection to Infinite or the mysteriousness around him. It's a bit gimmicky, but who can't say no to customizing their own character!

Sonic the Hedgehog.
The name brings cheers and jeers...depending on what your talking about. This guy is marveled for his classical daredevil fast style that became Sega's mascot....and despised for the things he tried outside that medium.
Personally, I'm no big fan of Sonic, but I've played enough to see the appeal of the Blue Blur. While Mario has stayed in his ways for a long time, Pikachu is still the face of 800 other creatures, and Link's time-traveling would make even Doc Brown need more markers to explain on his board with...Sonic has tried to branch out from his successful origins.
Oooooofffff course...it's not all going to work. And there have been many reminders of that....
From Sonic's dives into myth and Legend (Secret Rings, Black Knight), multi-character stories (Sonic Adventure), re-imagining (Sonic 06), and boarding skills (Sonic Riders), Sonic has gone many places...some people would say he shouldn't have gone.
But instead of "what's good", "what's bad", I'm going to try and reflect on my experience with the Blue Blur. It may not all be memorable to me, but there were at least some things that I remember as being pretty good...and maybe some bads here and there.
Overall, Sonic has had his ups and downs. In his early days, he started strong by being the fastest mascot out there, his games coming in blurs that excited people to go through beautiful stages in flash. Naturally, he started extending his reach...
Sonic Spinball was a natural selection. Pinball's a fast-paced game, and Sonic does go into a ball to go really fast. It's an instant win! Not to mention it's probably one of the more exciting games of Pinball you'd ever play. I think I got the last stage...but never beat it...shame.
Sonic gained friends as well, starting with Tails and later Knuckles, who each brought flying and wall climbing to the mix, allowing players to interact with the game world differently than "just going fast.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles was a game I remember a lot of. Combining Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, this was like two games in one that melded with each other. Playing as all three of the heroes in the stages was also pretty cool and led to the replay value. But one of the coolest features involved the Chaos Emeralds.
While you do collect these Emeralds as per usual, later on, you get transported to the Hidden Palace Zone...here, there's some plotness going on (with a battle between Sonic and Knuckles, a strange mural that foreshadows the final battle, and a cut scene involving Eggman stealing the master Emerald and a recovering Knuckles assisting Sonic to the next stage). Well, here in the Hidden Palace, your emeralds are turned into Super Emeralds...though they're kind of depowered. Landing on one takes you to a special stage that, if you're successful, powers the Super Emerald. Do this for all of them...and your reward is powered Hyper forms (Super for Tails), for the characters! Along with the usual speed, invincibility, and all that, Sonic and Knuckles can instantly slay enemies, and Tails has some birds that fly around and attack enemies for him. It's a nice reward for your endeavor I will say.
Sonic 3D Blast was move into the more dimensional space for the hedgehog. While it may move away from his time-honored traditional gameplay, it was a refreshing and interesting...But the later incarnation of Sonic's foray into the 3D world is probably the one I remember best...
Sonic Adventure.
Some look back on the game and think weird of it's graphics and the like, but personally, I think that was part of the charm. What made Sonic Adventure cool was that Sonic was finally in a more open-world environment...there were multiple stories with multiple characters...and the overarching story flowed into each other with history surrounding the antagonist Chaos and the background of Knuckles' people.
Sonic, Tails, Knuckles. and Amy are familiar to Sonic fans at the time, but Big the Cat and E-102 Gamma made their first appearances here. The story itself revolved around the mysterious creature, Chaos, who seems to draw power from the Chaos Emeralds that Eggman is trying to collect for it, so that he could use Chaos to take over the world. But what IS Chaos? Well...that's what you'll find out.
Sonic's stages were focused mainly on speed, with some scripted events that were pretty cool (though that whale chase was a bit strange). Tails' stages kind of focus on his whole "keeping up with Sonic" shtick, by having you race Sonic to the goal, using Tails' flying to your advantage. Knuckles' takes things a bit differently, where he tries to recover shards of the broken Master Emerald in his stages using a sort of sense that he has. Amy Rose, on the other hand, is similar to Sonic, but she's in a race for her life as she's stalked in stages by the robot Zero, who she'll have to escape from.
Big the Cat was a strange one, even to me. His levels involved fishing...mostly for his friend "Froggy". I admit, he's probably the most bizarre character...and I'm not really a fisher soooo....
Gamma's stages involve a literal time-attack stage, where you have more limited time, but can increase it by shooting enemies. But honestly, Gamma's story of having a conscience to free the animals trapped in his fellow robots is kind of endearing if you get where it's coming from.
The sheer variety in Sonic Adventure was awesome, and is probably my favorite. Stories clashing together, seeing the different view points, the different approaches in the stages and characters, the long fought battle that accumulates to that last hidden character story...it just made Sonic seem...so much MORE than just a fast moving hedgehog.
And then...Sonic Adventure 2 came out.
While Infinite may become one of the most iconic antagonists in Sonic's universe, SA2 certainly provided one of the most popular antagonist-turned-anti-hero in the franchise. Shadow the Hedgehog. Oh...and uhh...Rouge the Bat also first appeared in this too....
Taking a different page out of character selection, instead of tighter "individual stories" from Sonic Adventure, SA2 deals with "Hero" and "Dark" stories. Heroes, being Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles...and Dark, being Eggman, Rouge, and Shadow. (I'll note that Eggman and Tails were each in sort of battle armor, which was an interesting thing to do). Each pair have similar goals level-wise (Sonic and Shadow being fast, Tails and Eggman having time-attack stages, and Rouge and Knuckles looking for Master Emerald pieces). Having both sides to the story for both the "good" and "bad" guys really gives some nice perspective (as, essentially, everyone in SA was a "good guy"), and gives more character to the new arrivals, Shadow and Rouge.
Story-wise, things get really interesting. Eggman learns about, and awakens, Shadow, who states himself as the "Ultimate Life Form". For the assistance, he tells Eggman about a weapon about a space Colony, ARK, that, with Chaos Emeralds, can help Eggman in his desire to conquer the world.
The little scenes in between stages develop some rather interesting character moments. From Knuckles and Rouge's possible attraction to one another, to Tails and Robotnik trying to out genius each other, to Shadow's past involving the death of a loved one.
The accumulation of your hard work on both stories leads to perhaps one of the most disturbing scenes (Eggman's grandfather) and awesome battle in the game (against the prototype Ultimate Life Form) that has Sonic and Shadow teaming up.
Sonic Adventure 2 was just as awesome as Sonic Adventure. While I missed the stages where you could just move around at your leisure, the story factor of seeing both sides of a story were very intriguing.
I'd say from the SA point, my encounters with Sonic kind of drifted off. I did do the other Dreamcast game, Sonic Shuffle, for awhile...but don't think I ever got to complete it's story mode.
Sonic Heroes was an interesting venture. The party-of-three team was probably the draw for me (along with the team stories). Like Az, I don't like the lone-wolf things too much, and having Sonic characters actually working together in the same moment as pretty cool. It was also the first time I saw Team Chaotix, a nod of approval to finally have some reps in the Sonic verse!
The stories, if I recall, were straight forward. Sonic and his team face off against Robotnik, Rouge and her team (returning Shadow, and newcomer E-123 Omega) face off against fakes and Shadow deals with an identity disorder, Amy and her team search for each of their lost friends, and Team Chaotix gets work from a mysterious client who will pay them a fortune.
This all accumulates into a surprise ending with the reveal of a character long thought gone (and one who I admit I found interest in after seeing a Sonic OVA). Overall, not a bad Sonic game.
From this point, maybe Sonic got a little weird...
Shadow the Hedgehog went a bit TOO edgy by giving Shadow guns...though he seemed fine and powerful without them...
Sonic Riders introduced racing on airboards...which seemed to just prove that Sonic wasn't as fast as he thought he was...
And...Sonic 06 revitalization...which seemed to have some pretty good grounding...faltered heavily to load times, bugs, and sloppyness...
I think I got back to Sonic with The Dark Brotherhood. I think I was handheld-crazy, having played The World Ends with You at the time, and a Sonic RPG just enticed me.
After another defeat for Dr. Eggman, Sonic and his friends butt heads with the mysterious Marauders, who have kidnapped Knuckles. From there, things lead to the discovery of other characters (such as Shadow and E-123 Omega), learning about the Nocturnus Clan, and defeating an entity that wants to escape a prison that Knuckles' own people created.
Like an RPG, enemies are encountered in fields (like that, compared to random encounters), and Sonic and his pals can unleash special attacks through using the touch screen. I think my favorite was Shadow's initial one, which was pretty easy to do.
Featuring an impressive 11 member party (2 optional, and one newcomer), there's a variety of talent. For anyone playing, I highly recommend the optional Cream. That girl can break the game with her. Her first ability, Refresh, lets you practically never run out of special move power.
For an RPG, it's a very decent entry for Sonic, and one of his more successful ventures. Wish they would make more...
Oh yeah, bonus thing...like Az, I was a bit...perplexed by Sonic's latest series, Sonic Boom. I rarely have seen any Sonic related animation series...probably some Adventures, maybe an X or Underground waaaaay back, but...I don't know. I've glimpsed at the show here and there, and some bits made me chuckle...maybe it's the weirdness of seeing everybody sorta "stretched out" that made me raise a brow. And gotta admit the way they treat Knuckles like a uhh...not so intelligent person...seems kind of generic (OK, so yeeeaaaah...he was convinced by Eggman that Sonic was his enemy....on multiple occasions....but uhh....).
I think the only Sonic animation me or Az would remember is the Sonic OVA, a fun little dual episode thing that I wouldn't mind see again that brought Metal Sonic into the mix. The voice acting may be squeaky and the animation a bit weird, but it's a fun little journey with nostalgic appeal of the time way back.
Still with me so far? What a trooper! Take a deep breath, we're on the last one!
I think the last big Sonic game I played was the contrasting...Sonic Unleashed.
Ever since the crash of Sonic 06 (as far as people say, I can't rightfully judge myself till I can find a cheapy copy). I was wary of stepping into another Sonic game again, but I relented when I found a copy of Unleashed and decided to give the Hedgehog another try for old times sake.
The opening hooked me, and the theme music got me in good spirits. But, of course, I knew about the Werehog, Sonic's "opposite Super Form" or...something like that.
Story things, it was simple, getting Emeralds repowered and putting the world back together. You get to visit a variety of places over the world...but they're rather small and brief. Most of the time, you'll be in the levels, which are two fold.
First, Sonic's. Now these were awesome. I really got the feel of awesome speed and visual appeasement all at the same time...it was like the original game fastness, but now enhanced with better visuals. I still remember going "WHOA HO HO!!!" at the end of the first level and feeling in touch with the Blue Blur again.
Then came the Werehog levels. It's a sharp contrast to Sonic, dealing more with puzzles and way more combat. It's nice to have some contrast in games, yeah, but when your main character's "thing" is speed, it seems kind of awkward. Granted, fighting as Sonic is cool...but the Werehog isn't as appealing as it could have been.
Overall, it's not the best Sonic game, but it has it's highlights and the Sonic levels really do give a good direction for level design. While I didn't get too into the story, the final battle and it's music really got me hyped up....though...that was mostly when I was Sonic....when I was the big golem thing (you'll see), I was having...a....hard time...yeeeaaahh...
SO um...think that's everything I can remember. Honestly, I have no idea where Sonic's going to go now. He's been on his own, tried racing, tried puzzles, tried pinball, tried myth and legend, tried RPGs, tried to go darkside, tried to re-imagine himself, tried working time paradox things, and now a complete smash-together of antagonists with Eggman nearly ruling....
...me and Az might look into it. Would be fun to make our own custom characters! Though it's a shame the limited race choices are mammal or bird (I hear dragon WAS a choice)...ah well...if video games these days taught us anything...if it's something fans want...put it on the DLC and get more money!
Oh wait! I forgot about the movie....oh...Az is signalling me I've gone on long enough...
So yeah, this was just me giving my faulty-memories of Sonic a reboot for when Sonic Forces finally came. I'm no big Sonic fan, and not too heavy on my opinions for it, but like anybody, there were times I enjoyed big Blue's ventures...and that when I pick up another game with Sonic in the title, hopefully add another good memory. See you next time!

More like a trip down memory lane really...Well I did want to try to video it, buuuuutttt...me and Az are exhausted over trying to get into the Halloween spirit, so it never really came to it. But hey, reading is something to be encouraged.
Good thing Az isn't like that heh heh. But he did try out the avatar thing himself but uhh........lets just say there are some things to be avoided in certain circles...yeeeaaaah.
