You know... this is a perfect example of why it's both wonderful and awful to have a Middle Class. On the one hand, the quality of life for the bulk of people improves... or at least it seems to. On the other hand, those of us who are not The Rich tend to forget very easily what it's like to be The Poor.

But they keep saying the prisons are running out of room/overcrowded. If crime is going down why is that the case?

"Three strikes," sentencing changes, war on drugs, thought crime (hate crime), sex crimes (blow jobs a felony in HOW many states?), etc, etc. Just change the definition of "crime" and you can keep them overflowing. The USA has a higher percentage of its population incarcerated than any other major country (apart, possibly from China, just because numbers are hard to come by for China). Can't get elected without being "tough on crime." Politics in America has one-upped Orwell--you don't need Oceania when your own citizens serve for the two minutes hate.

Flipside is we also have the highest violent crime rate (going down, but still high). Wonder if that could have any correlation to the levels of poverty, lack of mental health services, creation of powerful drug cartels via price supports for illegal drugs (if they were legal, they'd be worthless)?

That's amusing, at least for the dialogue of the dog explaining that he just had to talk to someone. Reminds me of an issue of Gold Digger where Platinus had to talk with someone and chose to talk with the one character she could mind-wipe for her safety.

You know, it might be personal but I like most of all that little line "since I can talk, I was bursting to talk to someone" - because it's true. If you've got ideas, and a way of expressing them, it's downright frustrating if you have nobody to share them with.
