There are a lot of flash games that revolve around balancing objects with the goal being to prevent any from falling out of play. Maybe you could do something like that; have a game where they start off in round eggs and you need to use the hatched square-birds to keep them from rolling off and/or away until they hatch.
Make it to Lv. 10 and you are introduced to the blockatiel. Then at Lv. 25, you encounter the squarerrot.
