Karen Shittake has not lead a charmed life. Her mother died young and her father has struggled to make ends meet in the aftermath. She gained entrance to the PCA through charity and has not had the fortune of finding a way of making that work for her leaving her filled with self doubt and low self esteem. Bullies flock to her to get in their licks and work out their frustration on the poor girl leaving her all but broken. All that pales in comparison to the determination of a certain Vulpix.

The PCA as a school was dedicated to bringing together the best students of the world to learn how to become great battlers and leaders. Many of the best and brightest young ‘mon of the world came to the school to better themselves and to prove that they were worthy of being considered extraordinary. Not all students who come to the school started out exceptionally and some questioned why they were even there in the first place. Some take this as a badge of honor and strive to prove themselves to those that would look down on them. Others…others want to but struggle to find avenues to do it.
Karen Shiitake was one such student. Huddled in a corner and hidden behind some desks the young Medicham cowered and hoped her pursuer wouldn’t be able to find her. There were several ‘mon at the PCA who looked for targets like Karen; targets that didn’t deserve the treatment they received but would never fight back. The poor girl wanted nothing more than to honor the memory of her brave mother but didn’t know how to even begin. For the time being she hide herself away in hopes that the bully that was currently pursuing her would move on before she did any real damage.
“Come out come out wherever you are!” Sadly, it didn’t always work. Karen cowered deeper into her corner and did her best to silence her whimpers from her tormentor, Lara Tarke who had long viewed Karen as one of her favorite people to pick on. The Larvitar member of Team Choppa had gone after her for no other reason than she was an excellent target to work out her frustrations at life; and because the Medicham never fought back. Lara made her way into the classroom she thought she heard sniffles come from and peered around with a vicious expression on her face.
“Just come out and finish your beating so we can get this over with!” She yelled at Karen. The Medicham didn’t come out at the request and instead waited for the Larvitar to move in the opposite direction before she tried to sneak the other way. Lara had already caught Karen by surprise with one blow as the side of her face had already started to puff up and turn bluish in color. Her eye hadn’t started to swell yet which allowed the tears to stream down her face unhindered. She touched her cheek for a moment to make sure there wasn’t any cuts on her face and was a relieved to find no blood on her fingers.
The PCA was usually very quiet after hours, though open to let students come in and out as they needed to practice, work out or finish up homework assignments. This had the benefit of some secret dalliances being easier to accomplish; but it could also make it much easier for bullies to track down those they liked to pick on. Karen continued to inch closer to the door as she prepared to bolt down the hall and hopefully shake Lara for the night.
“Gotcha!” Lara’s attack came out of nowhere as Karen squeaked in surprise and dove for cover. The fist barely missed the Medicham before she ducked artfully below the blow. The Larvitar followed the blow up with another shot that bounced off of Karen’s Protect shell and sent her skidding down the hall for several feet.
“Pl-lease! Just l-leave me al-lone!” Karen begged through the tears that started to rain down from her eyes. Lara smirked and cracked her knuckles loudly before she advanced on the prone lady ‘mon. Anger blazed in the Larvitar’s eyes as she bore a glare into the poor young lady who backpedaled on her hands and feet in hopes that she might find a means of escape. Her back soon found a wall which prevented her from going any further and canceled any immediate hopes of vanishing.
“Now why’d I go and do something stupid like that?” Lara said as she opened her mouth and spewed forth gouts of flame towards Karen. Once again the Medicham threw up a hasty Protect to redirect the fire around her and avoided most of the heat though a bit of it slipped through her defenses. Tears continued to stream down Karen’s face as she scrambled to the side to try and get away again. Another swing from Lara kept her from getting anywhere as Karen used her Detect ability to scramble out of the way. She finally pulled herself to her feet and started to dash around the corner…only to smack right into one of the last people she wanted to see.
“What’s goin’ on here?” Before Karen was the Sceptile leader of Team Choppa, Esther Frondo. She towered over both Karen and Lara and looked none too pleased to see either of them; especially not her own teammate who was more than a little late for practice. Lara stopped quickly and gulped as she realized that she was going to get in trouble. Frondo looked down towards Karen who rested on her backside and continued to sob, unsure if she was going to be bullied more or what would happen.
“You’re late for practice,” Frondo bluntly told Lara as she looked towards her teammate and didn’t bother to continue to give Karen a second thought. The Larvitar blushed furiously as her leader glared down at her and left her feeling suddenly vulnerable. She looked around for the moment to try and find any kind of excuse to explain the situation; until her eyes settled on Karen once more.
“It’s her fault!” Lara exclaimed as she pointed at the Medicham, “She…she…she owes me money!” Karen snapped her eyes up towards Lara in shock. Words of disagreement tried to spill out from her lips but all that came out was more weeping and half words. Frondo glanced back down towards Karen with a cool look as her arms crossed over her chest.
“So?” the Sceptile said to the Medicham, “Pay her and finish this,” Karen looked between the two as she tried to protest the lie but still couldn’t get the words out of her mouth. She started to sit up to try and gain some sort of bearing.
“Yeah! Pay me!” Lara threw in as she threatened to hit Karen once more. A single look from Frondo stopped her and instead left the Larvitar to glower down at the Medicham. Karen looked between them helplessly and tried once more to pull something out of herself…but once more she failed. Beaten, she reached into her pocket and pulled out the last five dollars she had been given by her father for food that week and numbly handed it over towards Lara. The Larvitar ripped it out of her hand and brought her face down close to Karen’s to growl.
“I’ll find a way to get your for this!” Lara whispered harshly before she started to move over towards Frondo and tried to smile it off; the Sceptile didn’t seem to share her amusement.
“You’re going to have to do double time when we get to the gym,” Frondo informed the other, “There is never an excuse for missing team practice!” Lara blushed deeply as she was scolded by her team leader. Frondo turned and walked away from the Medicham dismissively before the Larvitar fell in behind her. One last glare came from Lara before the two disappeared around the corner; the cold voice of Frondo could be heard for several moments before it finally wafted away to nothing.
Karen didn’t hear any of it. As soon as the two had turned the corner she found herself a janitor’s closet to crawl into and shut the door while tears returned to her eyes as she curled up in a ball and sobbed. Her hand instinctively went for a locket that she kept in her pocket; the one that had belonged to her mother. She looked down at the jewelry and thought about her brave and capable mother and wished she could be like her. She hated the fact that she was so weak and unable to defend herself; that she couldn’t bring herself to stand up to bullies and help not only herself but her teammates. She would’ve settled to be as brave as her father who at least had gotten up the courage to ask out his late wife…she couldn’t even bring herself to do that to the ‘mon she loved. Karen squeezed herself into a tight curl and buried her face in her arms as she let the tears roll down her face unabated.
If there were two things that Rene Kitsunegari could be counted on finding it was a good sale on underwear and a girl in need of some comfort. The Vupix poked his nose down a hallway where he swore he could hear the desperate tears of a forlorn heart. Rene made his way down the hall once he saw the coast was clear and looked about until his ears twitched and he caught the sound he searched for. He stopped before a closet and rested his hand on the knob to turn it and seek out who it was that whimpered behind it. His heart sank when he finally caught sight of his friend in the corner.
“Karen?” He asked with some uncertainty. He knew it was her he just wasn’t sure why it was she was in there. The Medicham pulled back into the corner some more as she recoiled from the idea of one of her few but good friends seeing her like this. She tried to pull away as Rene quickly made his way in and embraced the girl, but it didn’t take long for her to rest her head against his shoulders and return the hug. The tears had finally finished by the time she came to a stop as she’d spent them all in the time before he showed up.
“What happened to you?” Rene kept a tight hug on the girl protectively as anger welled up in his stomach. Not only was her face puffed up from crying so much but the bruise on her cheek spoke volumes at what she had faced that afternoon. Karen was quiet for several moments after the question and took solace in the embrace before she was finally able to answer.
“It *sniffle* it was…Lara again,” she finally said. Rene frowned as he was well acquainted with the bully from Team Choppa; he’d felt the brunt of some of her attacks before he finally stood up to her and managed to get her to stop. It’d taken him some time and some training to get there, though, and a lot of pushing from those around him to do so.
“What’d she do this time?” He asked as he stroked her back soothingly to try and calm her down even more. It seemed to work as Karen began to stead herself more and more, especially now that she wasn’t alone.
“She was picking on me…then she lied to her team leader…and she forced me to give her…give her my last bit of lunch money for the week!” Fresh tears found a way to come to Karen’s face as her failure was laid bare to another. Rene gave her another fresh squeeze to try and calm her once again.
“Don’t worry, Karen,” he assured her, “I won’t let you go hungry during the week. I promise,” She shook her head against his shoulder and closed her eyes as she gripped her mother’s locket tightly in her hand.
“That’s…that’s not what the problem is, Rene,” She sobbed out as she confessed, “I…let her do it. I shouldn’t have let her hurt me like that! I’m not strong enough though…I can’t stop her,” the Vulpix’s frown deepened as much as his hug tightened on Karen. He’d always hated the fact that he felt weak in the face of bullies and others who picked on him. He’d worked hard to try and throw off the mantle of a weakling and be able to defend himself if need be. He hated to solve matters with violence and resisted every opportunity to do so…but he still knew what it felt like to be viewed as being a lesser ‘mon just because he didn’t fight all the time.
“Rene you’re…squeezing to hard…” Karen finally gasped out during the embrace. Rene stopped and realized what he was doing and eased up on his grip but didn’t ease up on his resolve.
“Karen?” He asked finally, “If I could find you someone, would you want to be trained to better defend yourself?” The Medicham blinked at the question and was a bit unsure how to answer it.
“Well, I would like to be able to defend myself better…” Karen admitted. She certainly would prefer it if she could not only help out herself but also help her team to get more than the one victory they had to their name, “But who’d…who’d teach me?”
“I’ve got a some ideas,” Rene grinned in response before he stood up and offered a hand to help Karen up, “I know more than a few people who are great trainers!”
“But…would they agree to help me?” She wasn’t sure that anyone would find her worthy of becoming a great fighter; or even a decent one. Rene waved it off as he lead her out of the closet and back down the hall.
“Oh like anyone’s going to be able to resist me asking them for help!” He looked up at Karen and gave her the most adorable expression he could. Even she felt the twinge of being all but unable to say no to anything he might ask. She was still reluctant to believe that anyone would agree to train her but if he felt so certain she’d go along with it for now. Maybe he was right and someone would be able to help her. Maybe she would finally be able to stand up for herself and make her mother proud; that in and of itself was worth at least trying to get better.
Karen stood up with Rene’s help as her resolve reached a level it’d never gone to before she headed out of the closet. She wasn’t sure what was about to happen, but she had a friend which was more than she’d had before. She’d rely on his belief for now and hoped that some day she’d earn it herself. With a final glance down to her mother’s locket she stuffed it into her pocket and followed the bouncy tails of the Vulpix before her.
