Otis slumped up against the booth. "My elbow is gonna be barkin' at me for a while," he said, rubbing it.
"Yeah, mine's not going to be happy with me either, and I'm older than you."
Otis grinned toothily at Venti. "What the hell ever, you're only seven years my senior."
"Still older than you, though if you were older than me, I could call you my otter pop."
Otis rolled his eyes, then leaned forward to look at the menu. "Kinky."
Venti took the menu and looked at the appetizers. "Only for you, babe."
"So how long did you and Damon talk?"
Venti glanced over at Otis, then turned his attention back to the menu. "For a couple of minutes. Not very long."
"Did he ask you out?"
And there it was, the question. The one he knew Otis was going to ask. Deep down he wondered if Otis still thought Damon was a good guy. Well, he didn't have the experience Venti did. "No. I think he knew that ship had sailed."
"I guess it's all for the best."
Venti kept his attention on the menu. "Say what you're really thinking, Otis."
"Huh?"
"You still think I made a mistake, walking out on him."
"It sucks you and him couldn't stay together. Yeah, he shouldn't have bottled up his feelin's like that, but you didn't have to throw a tantrum just 'cause he objected to somethin' you like doin'."
Venti hated it when Otis knew him better than he had a right to, and this was one of those times. "I am so glad you and me aren't dating."
"Sometimes I wish we could've. I'd keep you in line, and you'd have some hot otter lovin'."
"You're too--" Venti then snapped his eyes up to Otis, who was smiling goofily. "Hold on a second, did you just admit to temptation? To date outside your species?"
"I never said I would, but sometimes I wonder how you'n me would've been, couples wise."
Venti grinned, folding his arms on the table. "I'd have someone to keep me in line, and you'd have some hot jackal loving."
Otis tossed a wetnap packet at Venti. "Plagiarist."
