Like our Christmas card last year, the art director wanted something fun to wish everyone a Happy Halloween!
So, what's everyone's diabolical plan for this evening??

Yeah, I feel you. When we first moved to the UK, we were in a tiny little Scottish village and weren't expecting anyone since trick-or-treating isn't so much a thing here, but we bought some candy and did up the outside with pumpkins anyway. We got a few kids, gave them huge handfuls because we thought they might be all that was coming, but it actually ended up picking up and we had to go out for more candy XD
Now that we're in a nice neighbourhood in Birmingham, there are a few trick-or-treaters out and about, which is nice :) We were going to maybe go to a big group Call of Cthulhu Halloween gaming session at university with our friends, but Casey had work to do and he also wanted to make sure to be here to hand out candy :) So it'll be a quiet evening in for us, too.
How're you liking the book? How's it compare to the movie(s)?

I am actually not a fan of Stephen King's writing style. I find it kinda hard to get into the flow of his books. The only one I've ever read through end to end, and really liked, was Desperation. I tried to start reading the Dark Tower series when that movie came out, but I couldn't do it.
(Ok, on second thought, I lied. I've actually read through a few of his short story collections too, and I really liked some of those.)
This book, however, isn't too bad so far. I am familiar with the storyline of the movies (though I haven't seen them), so I can see already some pretty major differences, even though I'm about a quarter of the way in. One thing I know about the most recent movie that I wonder about is the significance of some of the characters. Two of the characters that, as far as I know, only have "background" roles in the movie are actually pretty major in the book. So I am wondering how they are going to justify brushing over them when it comes time for them to be important in the sequel. (The new movie did the smart thing, splitting the story in half. The movie only dealt with the kids' side. The sequel is going to focus on the adults.)
Funny thing though, you can tell the writing is dated. Because there are some things in the book King would have never been able to put into print nowadays.

I actually haven't read any of Stephen King's books... but, haha, yeah, that doesn't surprise me, the whole "dated" thing. Although it depends on how it's done, and what the "dated" bits actually are. Like, you can get away with saying pretty horrible stuff so long as you have a character do it and don't make all of them like it, but yeah, there can be a lot of inherent bigotry people didn't notice at the time, but will definitely notice later.
Oh, bigotry, bullying and racism pop up frequently as themes in all his books. I just mean a couple of things I've read so far that were kinda left out of the movies. Like when an eleven year old gets chased down the street by the creature in the form of a leper hobo whose screaming "****job for a nickel!"
That scene kinda raised my eyebrows.
Of course, King doesn't flinch in addressing even the most uncomfortable scenario in his books. But usually the characters are adults at least.
