Halloween 2017 - Horror Films - Stupidity in Abundance
I know it's an old cliche, but I can't help but feel that most horror protagonists are stupid. I mean, I get the fear thing, obviously, but sometimes it's just do....dumb.
There have been loads of moments where a character can simply just LEAVE the kill zone...only to do something stupid. They decide to go through all heck again because of love or something like that...they "look back" instead of continuing to run, which usually gets them killed...or decide to have a revenge streak and go in and kill the person that's been overclassing them the whole time.
And a heck of a lot of them never heard "curiosity killed the cat", which is a sad saying on it's own. If you have some confined creature in some room and "suddenly it's gone", don't GO IN to check yourself, leaving the door wide open. And along with that, anybody with a scientific background is going to prove to be an idiot, doing things outside their profession or something an ACTUAL expert would know NOT to do.
And, obviously, very few of them have watched a Jackie-Chan film. A lot of rooms in horror have stuff. And lets face it, anything could be a weapon. Killer in garage? Sure there are some gardening tools or cinder blocks or something (if not, take the RE7 option and RAM THEM WITH A CAR!). Living room? Plenty of old vase-like lights, small tables and chairs, and even pillows can be distracting.
And probably the MOST dumbest thing is NEVER double-tapping the killer (or whatever) when they're down! Everyone either just flings something and knocks them down and runs, or they get curious for some reason or another (looking at you masks) and get caught again. Just STAB OR SHOOT AND BE DONE WITH IT. And I feel the need to also say, for the most part, DO IT IN THE HEAD.
I get people get fearful in a horror situation, don't I know it, but a lot of these horror situations seem to ignore that...well...horror exists. Are there not horror movies in....horror movies? Do they exist? Do people WATCH any of them and learn a thing or two? Stop investigating every little noise, don't scream while running away, stop always looking behind you....heck, at least Scream had a couple decent rules that proved to be true.
Anyway, there's my rant about stupid characters in horror, probably said by millions of other people, but hey, it's something that came up!
Go ahead and guess what film me and Rigel are taking a look at, featuring one dumb moment for a character in a horror film that doesn't have much excuse (gun still had bullets by the way, just saying).

Honestly this exact thing is why I barely ever watch horror movies. The vast majority of the time it's just painful watching the protagonists, people we're supposed to root for, die in an absolutely stupid way or even worse, cause absolutely everything that happens. It's why I absolutely hate the new alien movie. 'Oh, new uncharted and unexplored planet that seems habitable at first glance. Let's explore this without any closed enviroment gear or breahing aparatuses or any sort of protection whatsoever'. Even tho breathable air in the immediate vicinity doesn't mean there's no poison plant or gas leak or something somewhere that would horrifically hurt the crew if approached. The movie littelary would not have happened if they followed basic protocol, even mass effect andromeda got it right that on first approach to any planet you need to always wear a helmet.
