Chapter 3
>The smell of acrid biteleaf smoke fills your nostrils as you open your eyes
>Your head feels like it’s filled with broken glass as you look around the hazy room
>You spot Freylah sitting back at the desk chair wearing her open doublet and smoking a small wooden pipe as she reads a scroll
*She can read? A scav can read?…even I can’t read…
>You try to sit up but immediately feel your completely numb arms yanked back by the rattling chain cuffs at your wrist
>Freylah looks over at you, “Ah! Finally awake? I can see my little cabin boy slept quite sound last night. How’s ze hangover?”
“Like I want to die”
>Freylah chuckles, “Well, zhat’s what happens when you challenge your superiors to a drinking game, human”
>You groan in pain as you close your eyes
>”Lucky for you I am a forgiving captain” said Freylah as she reached over, grabbing a blue ceramic flask off a pile of papers from the desk
>Freylah hops down off the chair and climbs onto the bed, straddling your chest
>She pops the cork off with her teeth and takes a swig before leaning forward and grabbing your chin
>”Open your mouzh” she commands
>You open your mouth as Freylah tips the bottle
>A dark green gunk oozes from the container into your mouth
>You immediately gag and almost puke as the concoction stings your mouth with the flavor of rancid vegetable grease
>Freylah cups your mouth and strokes your neck, ”Don’t spit it out! I worked very hard to make zhis. Swallow it!”
>Your eyes tear up from the disgusting oil but you listen and swallow
>You feel a burning sensation flow down your neck and quickly spread through your body
>You begin to feel energetic and a slight rush of euphoria as your hangover begins to subside
>Freylah sees the relief on your face and smiles
>She grabs your head, holding you to her exposed chest while calmly running her fingers through your hair
>”See? Zhat was not so bad. I knew you could do it” said Freylah in an almost motherly tone
>You relax in her arms, listening to her rapid heartbeat as you breath in the warm feather smell emanating from her chest fluff
>You feel the ache in your muscles subside as you drift off peacefully n Freylah’s tiny arms
>After a couple minutes, Freylah gives your cheek a couple light pats, “Come on, you can’t hide in my breasts all day, get up, we got work to do”
>You sit up back from Freylah’s chest as she reaches one arm up over the bed’s headboard, pulling out a small key
>She takes the key and unlocks the cuffs as your numb arms drop like lead weights to your sides
>You try to lift them but you feel nothing as you panic, “Uhhh…Freylah!?!?”
>”It’s fine, don’t be such a baby. Ze feeling will come back in a couple minutes” said Freylah jumping off the side of the bed and grabbing her necklace and dagger belts
>You feel the rushing pain of blood surging back into your arms as you grunt in pain
>Freylah fixes her hair and buttons up her doublet as she inspects herself in a small golden hand mirror
>You sit up but struggle, scooting across the bed with your butt to the edge
>”Stop lollygagging, I need to do a morning walk about. Get over here and open ze door. Chop Chop ” said Freylah clapping her paws at you
>You stand off the bed and wobble over to the door as your spaghetti arms awkwardly slip around the doorknob
>Freylah repacks her pipe, lighting it off a candle and adjusts her collar waiting for you
>Your numb fingers flop uselessly over the doorknob as the nerves burn in your arms
>Freylah sighs out a cloud of biteleaf smoke as she pinches the bridge of her snout
>”Here. Move aside” says Freylah as she pushes your hands away and opens the door herself
>Freylah walks out into the hall, “Close ze door on your way out, and be quick about it”
> You fumble with the doorknob for a couple of minutes before Freylah walks up, grabs the handle and quickly pulls it shut
>She turns around and quickly walks back down the hall
>You hear a deep, short, huff come from the dark corner to your left
>You look over to see Habbick leaning against the cabin wall with his arms crossed and crossbow at his side
>”Dumb human. Can’t even ze door properly. Should’ve put you to bottom of ze sea like we were going to” grumbled Habbick before spitting a wad at your feet
>You think about striking the yinglet but decide against it. Besides, you wouldn’t be able to take him with your noodled arms anyway
>Habbick nods his head in Freylah’s direction, “You best not keep Cap’n waitin, skins, she not slow down for no one, not even for ‘cabin boy’”
*skins?
>You turn and lightly jog down the ship towards Freylah’s direction, noodle arms flailing as the boat rocks gently side to side
>Your pulse quickens as the feeling in the tips of your fingers slowly return with a painful tingle
>A couple minutes later you catch up to Freylah helping a young, sand colored, yinglet sailor untangle himself from a length of deck rope
>”Sorry. ..Sorry Cap’n,…Sorry…Sorry again…” said the yinglet apologizing with every knot Freylah skillfully untangled
>Freylah ignores the yinglet’s squeaky apologies. After fully unraveling the rope, Freylah quickly circles it around her shoulder before pulling it off and ringing a knot around it
>She hands the bundle back to the yinglet and slowly instructs him on how to properly carry the rope so it doesn’t come undone in the future
>Watching yinglets teach each other, nonetheless, listening patiently to instructions felt beyond bizarre
>”Got all zhat sailor?” Freylah said puffing up straight with her arms crossed behind her back
>”Got it!” said the yinglet giving a quick salute
>”Good. Now zhis will never happen again. Correct?”
>”Never again, Cap’n” said the yinglet with pride before giving another awkward salute
>”Good, now be off. Ze deck needs you” said Freylah before the yinglet scampered off down the hall with the rope bundle
“Wow, you’re quite the professional, aren’t you?”
>”Why does zhat surprise you? Is it because I am a lowly yinglet?” said Freylah not looking at you
>Before you can get a word out, Freylah turns and continues walking down the hall
>You sprint up beside her
>She walks along quietly, not acknowledging your presence
“So..it seems like your second–in-command wishes me dead.” You say trying to catch her attention
>She briefly stops and looks at you before continuing down the hall again, “He wouldn’t dare harm you unless I gave him ze order to, just ignore him.”
“Just ignore someone who threatens me?”
>” I’ve know him my whole life and he isn’t about to change his hatred for humans anytime soon. Habbick is an old yinglet, every fiber of his being is tough as iron and as stubborn as a mule.” Said Freylah
“Well I am amazed he’s made it at all, he seems a little….soft in the head”
>“Don’t let his terrible grammar fool you. A yinglet doesn’t live zhat long zhrough pure luck alone. He might not be ze most well-read yinglet but he’s very clever” said Freylah stopping again and pausing
>Freylah looks up into your face, “Whatever you do Fetu, never underestimate him, you understand?”
>You felt a little unsure but nodded your head anyway
>”Good, now come on, zhere is a whole crew to inspect still so zhis time try to keep up” said Freylah beginning her walk again, this time at a much faster pace
>You quietly shadow behind her as she spends the next couple hours making the rounds through every part of the ship and quickly examining every crewmember
>You’re amazed at Freylah’s level of patience, discipline, and speech, never once losing her temper no matter how frustrating the situation
>Eventually, you two make it onto the deck as Freylah quickly establishes her presence before both of you head to the stern of the ship
>Freylah talks to the sailor manning the steering wheel, perched on a small crate, before heading back to the deck railing
>Freylah hops onto a crate pushed against the railing,
>She props her arms on the railing as she look out over the misty wake of the ship
>You walk up and lean on the railing next to her
“So…You do this everyday?” you say trying to break the ice once again
>”Every single day” she says with a sigh looking out at the gulls sweeping back and forth behind the ship
“Freylah I-“
>“You want to get back to shore? Right? Home?”
“uh….yeah but I-“
>“You want to know why I am keeping you here?”
“yyyeah but-“
>“You want to know how I came into getting zhis ship? Zhis crew?”
“…..but-“
>“And you want to know why I am so damn good at fucking right?” said Freylah looking at you out of the corner of her eye with a playfully sinister grin
>You cross your arms and give her a glare of “Seriously, stop cutting me off ”
>Freylah lets out a tiny chuckle as she turns her gaze back to the rippling, foamy wake
>”First off, I can’t let you go back to ze shore. It won’t help you anyway. Nobody would believe you if you told zhem about a crew of yinglet sailors now would zhey?”
>You scrunch your face as a small blast of ocean mist kicks into your face
>You wipe your face and try to imagine telling people about what had happened to you
>You’d be laughed out of the tap house in less time then it takes to blink
>Freylah looks over at your frustrated expression before giving you another smirk, “Besides, Your more valuable to me zhen just sex. If you give me sometime to explain, I zhink you will be more zhan willing to go along wizh….well let’s call it a ‘business venture’”
*”Business? Go into business with a scav?”
>”I am guessing I’d be correct in assuming you’re from a long line of peasant fishermen like most?”
>You nod yes, even though you’re a little offended at Freylah calling you a peasant….I mean you are but…….
>”And I am assuming you’ve spent your entire life hand-weaving your own casting nets, learning ze best fishing spots and casting techniques?” said Freylah rolling the cuffs on her doublet through her fingers
”Yeah….what does that have to do with anything?”
>Freylah takes a deep breath, exhaling a large lungful before staring, ”I had a dream a about three weeks ago. Usually, I have….nightmares but zhis dream…..zhis dream was different”
“….uh huh…..”
>”In zhis dream I pictured myself at ze bow of my ship, ze salty wind coursing over my fur…” said Freylah lightly stroking a paw over her hair as her gaze spaced out into the distant horizon
>You try to look at where Freylah is looking but you don’t see anything out of the ordinary
>”I stayed ze bow for what felt like hours as I watched ze sun lower till ze sky was a bright golden color, all the while feeling a rush of happiness course through my spine….” said Freylah as she visibly shivered
>You feel a tingle up your spine as you shiver as well
>””After a bit I heard ze voice of a human call from over ze stern of ze ship in ze most silky, attractive sounding voice I’ve ever heard....”
>You watch Freylah scrunch her face as she tries her best to talk in a deeper voice, “Ze nets are full boys, reel ‘em in! We’ll never be want for food ever again”
>You chuckle a little at Freylah’s human impression as she gives you a quick side-eyed glare before continuing, “Zhat was when zhese two giant nets were pulled up from ze sides of ze ship by a series of pulleys and cranks.”
>You look at Freylah slightly confused
>”Ze nets piled onto ze deck as yinglets deckhands went to open zhem up, A cascade of the freshest fish I’d ever seen in my life spilled onto ze deck” said Freylah making a swiping motion outward with her arms like a parting wave
>”I teared up at ze sight of it. In zhat moment I knew zhat I would never have to worry about money or food ever again” said Freylah getting a little choked before letting out a cough and resuming, ”I walked zhrough ze foot deep sea of floundering fish as I ran my hand over zhem just to double check zhat zhey were real”
>You try picturing so many fish on one ship but can’t hardly wrap your mind around it
>”….zhey were real….as I swear on my mozher’s grave…zhose were ze most real fish I’ve ever felt in my life…” Said Freylah, “…And zhen…a human hand touch my shoulder” said Freylah putting her right paw on her left shoulder “…I looked up into a tall, muscular, young, tan skinned fisherman’s face... He looked down into my eyes and said, ‘We did it…We actually did it Freylah”
>You pull a tiny splinter of wood from the railing and flicked it over into the water below
>Freylah looks over at you, “Ever since I laid my eyes on you last night…I knew zhat human…was you”
>You immediately straighten up and look back at Freylah, “What?! Me!? Look…I think your overestimating my skill here. Maybe your fisherman is still out there and your just mistaking me for someone else I-“
>”I don’t make mistakes Fetu, I make decisions…I wouldn’t be here today if I zhought any ozher way. You are ze fisherman from my dreams whezher you want to believe it or not. You were meant to cross my pazh, you were brought here by ze Gods or whatever you believe to help me…. to help make my dream a reality.”
>You look back towards the expansive ocean, pondering whether the Gods even did such things or had the power to
*”Was I really delivered to her by the Gods themselves?... I am just a random fisherman…Just some random peasant….Why would the Gods care?
>”I can guarantee you a more comfortable life here zhen scrouging the Val Salia markets for scraps and small coin like you most likely were before.”
>You open your mouth but quickly close it. Living in the shadows of Val Salia is not for the feint of heart
>You think for a couple minutes more before speaking, “What would I do here? What would my job even be?”
>Freylah smiled, “Why…You’d be my cabin boy of course!….What? You didn’t zhink zhat I was just joking when I said zhat last night? Right?”
>You give Freylah a “You’ve got to be shitting me” look
>”You will be in charge of taking after me, running my messages, helping me get ready in ze morning, everyzhing and anyzhing I ask of you wizhout question. All super easy servant-y stuff essentially. Also, you will help me design and build ze net contraptions from my dreams and act as some extra muscle here and there”
”…Oh…. Is that all?” you say sarcastically, propping your chin up with your hands
>” I know ze zhought of being on a yinglet controlled ship would be a nightmare to most humans but as you see, I run tight ship. Just know zhat I need you on my crew Fetu, I promise to provide you with all ze food and amenities we have at hand. You’ll live a life of luxury only a few humans get to experience in all zhere lives. So, what’ll it be?”
>You reach your palms up and rub your eyes as the salt air burns your pupils. You turn around and stretch your arms high into the air.
>”Welll?” said Freylah
“I am thinking” you say cracking your knuckles as you stare down at the crew of yinglets diligently manning the ship as you lean your elbow on the railing behind you
> You lean your head back over the railing as your mind races with flashbacks to all the times you narrowly escaped death on your little boat, all the times you accidentally sliced open your flesh on a jagged rock or dull blade, every time you pulled a muscle hauling in a large catch, every time you had to go hungry, every time you had to beg for coin…
* “Life as a fishermen wasn’t as great as pops made it out to be…”
> You let out a deep sigh
“Alright, I’ll join your crew” you say staring up into the clear blue sky devoid of clouds
>Freylah’s ears flick up as she smiles, “Now, Zhat’s what I like to hear”
“Yeah…” you say flatly as you continue to gaze upwards
>Both of you stay silent for a couple minutes listening to the sounds of the deckhands and flapping sail before you break the silence, “You still haven’t told me how you got the ship”
>Freylah anxiously thumbs one of the dried ears on her hemp necklace, “Zhat story….zhat story is for anozher time. “
>Freylah turns around and hops off the crate, “If your true to your word zhen I will expect you to return to Habbick. He will show you your quarters, give you ze assignments for ze day and get you some actual clozhs.“
>You audibly groan at hearing Habbick’s name
>”Don’t let him get to you, just remember what I said to you earlier, be patient with him. He’s been through a lot and not one to give out trust so easily.” Said Freylah dismissing the yinglet on the steering wheel as she jumped up on the crate to take its place
>You walk past Freylah as she begins to coax the wheel in the right direction
>”Oh and one more zhing before you go” said Freylah calling you back with a pointer finger
>You walk back and lean down to Freylah, “Yeah?”
>Freylah leans forward and gives you a kiss on the side of your neck before saying sensually in your ear, “Welcome aboard my little cabin boy, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed”
>You lean back, touching the spot where Freylah kissed you as your cheeks and ears blush red
>You feel a warmth form in your chest as you smile at your new captain
>You turn from her sensual, fiery gaze as you walk back down into the deck below
