Maybe, but - as a fan who doesn't know the plans behind the development - think it was a good thing how that scene was really horrifying.
Maybe it's a cultural thing, but in the West LGBT characters tend to be harmless and (metaphorically) neutered for fear of upsetting the audience, so thought it was amazing to see Samantha turn out to be totally villainous.
