Shades of Life - The Origin of Shade Koopa - Part 3A
Phhhhhewwwyyy....well...me and Az are swamped with working on stuff for the holiday and......some of it's gone uhh...not so well....but we're getting there! Anyway, here's another piece with some excitement for the patient little Koopa kid. Enjoy!
It's not uncommon in the Dark Land that a castle was built. Like in the Mushroom Kingdom, it was a fashion statement of one's power. Of course the differences came that, in the Dark Land, the more the castle looked like it's ruling owner, the better it was suppose to be. Nobody questions the ego of these people in open conversation...
The castle our protagonist has heard about, however, seems to have fallen in disrepair...and also collapsed underground. It had been that way for years, with several dangerous mining attempts, leading to more of nature's volatile elements to take it apart.
At first, the entrance to the underground chambers had been guarded by many creatures to ensure the safety of others...or more readily to make sure any rare finds or great treasure was dug up by them or for the ones they've served. However, after years of fruitless searching, it's importance died, and the guard dwindled...
...until there was only one Goomba left. And, clearly, he came to conclusion why he was left with the "honor" of taking the post. Of course, solidarity comes with some perks, as the Goomba in question digs through his storage chest for...a pair of headphones. With a little foot-tapping, the Goomba begins breaking into song, revealing his name as Moomba.
At first casing the area for a way inside the underground, our protagonists' investigation is momentarily put on hold as he watches the Goomba's strange singing and dancing. However, it's a good distraction as the Koopa goes to the unguarded door and uses his sharp claws to pick the rather simple lock. The Goomba's singing gave way to silence with every step as the Koopa made his way down into the depths...
The underground was wide, with views of rocky formations and free flowing lava between the dark walls that remained from the mining in years far gone. The sight takes the young Koopa's interest as he continues to walk...and his foot seems to sink a little when it hits the ground next. It was quite obvious from the impact of something large behind him that he had made...a mistake.
Outside, the impact, or perhaps the activation of the old trap, caused a vibration near the entrance of the tunnel. The dancing Goomba's rhythm was broken...and he realized...so was the lock on the door he was suppose to be guarding...
His cape flinging behind him, revealing his patchwork shirt, the Koopa ran at full sprint as the giant spiked ball rolled toward him. Running and running, the Koopa sees a break in the path ahead and, more importantly, the dangling rope. Jumping at the end of the path and grabbing for dear life onto the old lifeline, our protagonist watches as the deadly ball rolls off into the lava river just below him. He was saved. While Goomba laments on the long path, or ignoring the possibility of being out of shape, the Koopa uses his momentum to swing himself back onto land...
Koopa Trivia! : While Shade wears a patchsuit of red and green cloths, his outer-wear is actually a large cape made from Cape Feathers. Unfortunately, it's so old and a bit tattered that it doesn't give much power to glide through the air. Would have been useful if it did!
