Mostly ore smugglers and on rare occasions pirates. This particular one is currently protecting a civilian research submarine from an ultra nationalist militia / terrorist organization secretly funded by a power mad CIA director. It's an aging and obsolete craft going toe to toe with state of the art aerospace superiority fighters. The pilot has only survived because she's very heavily cybernetically augmented for flying and aforementioned ultra nationalists rabidly oppose augmentation technology.
Another wonderful concept! Just makes me wonder how much use this one is outside of using railgun - I mean, while I assume the main weapon is devastating against many large targets, how does it take on smaller threats like drone swarms or faster aircrafts performing manevours preventing lock-on and such? Seems to be more close to a torpedo bomber analogue than fighter, with a weapon that requires the aircraft to be aimed straight at the target, and a large or slow enough target not to dodge it. And it doesn't seem much use for close air support like Su-25 or A-10 either, with the engines and sleek shape indicating it's meant to be damn fast.
Good observations! It's intended as a " Ship Killer " who's main purpose was to knock out the engines on ore smugglers in the early days of space exploration before the first Orbital Elevators went up, once building large scale orbital defense platforms became inexpensive this particular craft was very quickly retired and by the " modern day " of the setting it's from it's largely considered obsolete. The character who owns it bought it with a 2 year intentured work contract at a mass auction where the military was liquidating them to whichever private contractors would take them off their hands.
Tl;Dr It was a good idea at the time and filled a vital niche role, it aged quickly though.

Ty! I sent quite the excessive textwall to FlipFox when I asked for the commission lol. And as he staid when faced with smaller targets it relies on various munitions being loaded into disposable sabot canisters. The most frequent are tungsten ball bearings and mono-filament wire or other forms of shrapnel. If the user is particularly well equipped than cluster charges with magnetic trigger munitions might be loaded instead.
