My guess, the last time he held a gun, it wasn't in him to pull the trigger (even if Conner took the choice out of his hands). Through most of that last adventure, all he could do was talk (and still showed courage doing so), but there was little he could actively do when things got heated. I think that struck a nerve somewhere.
