Ooh! Look at that dark energy surrounding Mahari!
In Phosphorous's story, after her (she identifies as female even though it is genderless) corruption, a group of insane asylum doctors thought they could use materialized dark energy as pain-reliever medicine for its numbing effects and as a battery for newly discovered electricity during the 19th century. After the people who came into contact with it died they became pretas (hungry ghosts) and rakshasas (demons from the in-between).

These characters were also not really good to begin with because of their dastardly deeds so it was easy for them to get tainted by the dark energy. Phosphorous (the abyssal dutchie) didn't intentionally corrupt anyone. They ultimately did it to themselves!
